    iPhone Users Love Flickr

It appears that the same pansies that buy the iPhone (And I’m seriously considering becoming one.) are also big fans of the Flickr photo uploading and sharing program. An article at www.everyjoe.com reveals that the most uploaded photos on Flickr come from an iPhone camera, with the Nokia N95 a very distant second. The reasoning behind this is the iPhone apps that batch and upload iPhone photos to Flickr. The author of the article also assumes that the iPhone is the most accessible Smartphone with a camera. Not something I agree with, but there is some validity to this argument. I for one believe that the reason iPhone is the most popular phone amongst Flickr users is because they have overlapping demographics. Young teenagers and professionals in their late twenties…

    iPhone Exploding in Europe… Literally

A growing pandemic is sweeping Europe, threatening to unbalance the fragile social structure and plunge the continent into a second medieval age. Perhaps I am exaggerating, but the recent cases of exploding iPhones are sure to cause more than just a few raised eyebrows. Several reports have claimed that iPhones in France and England have overheated and exploded. While there was no report of serious injury, the possibility of such tragedy is possible unless Apple and the European Commission solve this problem with all due haste. I hesitate to compare these events to the unfortunate death of the iPhone user in China. (The iPhone in his breast pocket exploded.) The victim in China could have been using a knockoff, while the iPhones in Europe were probably legit.…

    Wikipedia Mobile Now Available

Wikipedia Mobile is now available in the App Store. The bastion of free, if at times questionable, information can now be accessed completely free on iPhone and the iPod. There have been several third party developers that have created Wiki type apps for the iPhone in the past, but this is the first official app by Wikipedia. Wikipedia Mobile does not store any information on your mobile device, but does provide you with an interface that makes searching Wikipedia on your iPhone all the more convenient. Much like its web counterpart, Wikipedia Mobile does not come with any colorful additions or fancy gizmos. It is Wikipedia in its purest form. Now when you wake up at 3 am, wondering how tall the average Argentinean is or how many Sardines are in a can, you can use your…

Apple Controls 32% of the Wi-Fi Market

Apple controls 32% of the Wi-Fi market, revealed a consensus by Meraki, a network equipment manufacturer. Apple currently controls about 14% of the Smartphone market, causing some mobile industry pundits to show that this is a prime example of the strength of the iPhone in the American mobile market. I couldn’t disagree more. While Apple’s share of the Smartphone market is impressive and undeniable, to assume that directly correlates with the amount of Wi-Fi being used is appallingly amateurish. The reason Apple is strong in the Wi-Fi sector, is because most of its users are either pimply faced adolescents, or young professionals, unlike RIM, which caters to more mature individuals with above average incomes. I would much rather see a study that shows the average Wi-Fi…

New AAA App for the iPhone

It’s a classic scene from a horror movie. An innocent wench is driving on some deserted, desolate road when all of a sudden her car breaks down. (The Murphy Law is common in the horror genre it seems.) At this point, the fair maiden would be easy pickings for all sorts of malicious serial killers and psychotic sexual deviants. Well those frightening days are all over for those of you with an iPhone. AAA has come out with a new app that provides roadside assistance for those in need. The app even allows AAA to determine your location according to your iPhone’s GPS device. This is extremely handy for those who know that they are on a road in Arkansas and not much else. A useful app, which is saying something when it comes to the mile high trash heap called the App Store.…

    TomTom GPS App Available

TomTom, the famous GPS device, is now available in the app store for those of you in Canada and the United States. The TomTom app will do pretty much everything the normal GPS unit can do. The question remains however, what will happen to your iPhone should you need to use it while driving. Can the iPhone handle a phone call while TomTom is running? Can TomTom tell you how to get somewhere while you are listening to music? The main reason that these factors are important is because of the price. TomTom costs a shocking $100. If the app cannot run simultaneously with another program, then you would probably be better off buying a dedicated GPS device which run for more or less the same cost. I personally wouldn’t use TomTom because of the name. I don’t want to yell out…

New Live Streaming News App for the iPhone

With out a lot of hoopla or chest thumping, a company called Livestation has released an iPhone app with the same name that allows users to view live streaming news. Livestation is available in 16 different countries across Europe, but has not been officially released for American viewers at the time of this writing. Currently, the only available news channel on Livestation is BBC World News, though one would assume that a greater selection will follow in due course. Livestation can be used with both Wi-Fi and 3G. Livestation has already attracted corporate interest, with NASA apparently mulling over the notion of launching a live streaming channel based on Livestation technology. As with all live streaming applications, the video better remain super smooth and super…

AT&T Late with MMS for the iPhone?

It seems that the iPhone 3GS has MMS capability. (I didn’t know, nor did I really care.) Usually more technology is not something to whine about, but disgruntled iPhone users have not kept quiet about what they consider is the biggest tragedy since the Titanic. You see, even though the iPhone 3GS is MMS compatible, Apple’s bed buddy, AT&T, has yet to offer the service for its iPhone subscribers. What has iPhone users defecating in their trousers is that AT&T promised that MMS would be available for the iPhone in later summer. That is clearly not going to happen, as we are already in the middle of August, with no official declaration from AT&T regarding a timetable for the coveted MMS service. I find iPhone users to be somewhat gullible. AT&T is often late with releasing…

Apple Sales Jump to 13.3% of all Smartphones

With the economic crisis still gripping the world with its merciless talons, cell phone sales have decline so far in Q2 of 2009. A report by Gartner claims that the decline is somewhere in the neighborhood of 6.1%. The good news is however, that Smartphone sales have soared 27% during the same time period. Nokia still leads the way with 45% of the Smartphone market, though one could make the argument that many Nokia ‘Smartphones’ should not be placed in the Smartphone category at all. The biggest jump in sales (13.3% overall) goes to Apple, with the 3G S continuing the succession of popular products by the company we all love to hate. RIM holds on to second place at 18.7%. HTC was steady at 6% while Palm did not crack the top five, despite more than decent Pre sales so…

    Civ Coming to iPhone

Hurray! Civilization Revolution is now available for the iPhone and iPod touch. For those of you who are not overly familiar with video games, the Civilization series is a turn based strategy game developed by the guru of gaming, Sid Meier. (The man also behind Sim City and The Sims.) At only $9.99, Civilization Revolution is a bargain and should keep iPhone and iPod users busy for many months to come. Sid Meier was justifiably excited over the release of his latest gem. "We choose platforms based on where we feel consumers will have the best game play experience with our titles, and the iPhone allows us to introduce this game play to mobile consumers - new and old." Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K Games, the company that owns the Civilization series…
