Apple controls 32% of the Wi-Fi market, revealed a consensus by Meraki, a network equipment manufacturer. Apple currently controls about 14% of the Smartphone market, causing some mobile industry pundits to show that this is a prime example of the strength of the iPhone in the American mobile market. I couldn’t disagree more. While Apple’s share of the Smartphone market is impressive and undeniable, to assume that directly correlates with the amount of Wi-Fi being used is appallingly amateurish. The reason Apple is strong in the Wi-Fi sector, is because most of its users are either pimply faced adolescents, or young professionals, unlike RIM, which caters to more mature individuals with above average incomes. I would much rather see a study that shows the average Wi-Fi use per unit. Sure Apple is the leader in Wi-Fi usage, but not because of its market share, but rather because its customers tend to use Wi-Fi more than non-iPhone users.
