Apple is set to release the iPhone HD and Steve Jobs could hardly contain his exaggerated excitement – unless of course he does feel that this latest generation iPhone is anything to smile about. Every single upgrade that will be part of the iPhone HD has already been available in the wireless industry for a number of years. From the 5 MP camera to multitasking, it really is been there done that. Which Countries and Carriers Will have the iPhone HD?
Apple fan boys have circled June 24th on their calendars. This is of course the big day in which the iPhone HD becomes available. The only question is where will it be available and which carriers will offer the device. For Yanks, everything is status quo. AT&T will be the only carrier to offer the iPhone in the United States, with the 32GB version coming in at a price tag of 300 USD with contract. Europeans will have more carrier selection for the most part. Brits can choose to go with any carrier currently offering the iPhone, as all three are scheduled to offer the new generation. AT&T Defecates on Customers Yet Again
Those of you interested in tethering with your new iPhone HD are in for a rude awakening. AT&T has announced that the tethering option will not be available with the old unlimited data plan and will only be possible with one of the new pay as you download plans. This represents quite a conundrum for current AT&T customers because they are not required to give up their unlimited plan, even when they upgrade to the new iPhone. The million dollar question is would you switch to the new data usage plan in order to take advantage of tethering? This is a bad move by AT&T in my opinion as it forces loyal customers to make choices that they detest. Apple Slashes iPhone Prices
Apple is trying to clear the decks of its ‘junk’ 16GB 3GS phones. This is obviously a move by Cupertino to rid themselves of older models in order to make way for the next generation devices. Wal-Mart has announced that the price of the iPhone 16GB 3GS phones has been cut by half. The iPhone 3GS will run for just under $100, but the two year contract is still mandatory. There is much anticipation by tech nerds for the new iPhone device and they are unlikely to take advantage of the bargain price of the soon to be older models. Bargain hunters and soccer moms however, will likely jump on this opportunity. This is a shame because the two year contract makes the purchase of the 3GS unwise, even at a reduced price. AT&T Continues to Bully Consumers
AT&T, long known for being a major slave driver in the mobile industry, has made some crucial and perhaps damning changes to their Early Termination Fees or ETF. Starting June 1st, poor souls who purchase an iPhone from AT&T will see ETF fee of $325, as opposed to the current ETF of $175. Speculation in the market has it that AT&T and Apple are trying to stop consumers from purchasing an iPhone, breaking the contract and paying off the ETF, and then selling the iPhone online for a profit. On a brighter note, AT&T will lower ETF fees for some phones to $150. Android outsells the iPhone
I guess that it was inevitable. According to the market research firm NPD, Android operated phones outsold the iPhone in the first quarter of this year. Android powered devices were second in total sales in the United States during the beginning of 2010, controlling 28 percent of the market. RIM is still the undisputed king of Smartphones in America, controlling 36 percent of the market. While this report may be sound in numbers, it may not be sound in judgment. The iPhone HD will massively increase sales for Apple upon its release. In fact, most Americans who wanted to purchase an iPhone have already done so. Police Raid Gizmodo Blogger’s Home
It has been reported that Apple is starting to flex some major muscle regarding the stolen 4G iPhone. Police have raided the home of Gizmodo blogger Jason Chen, seizing several electronic devices. The COO of Gizmodo owned Gawker Media argued that the search and seizer is illegal under California State law because Jason Chen is a journalist and is protected by the publication. This is completely irrational thought. Gizmodo committed a crime when they took apart and reported about a product that was not theirs. In addition, Gizmodo knew that the prototype iPhone was stolen and in effect, collaborated with the criminal in order to publish the story. Released only three weeks ago for the iPhone and already one million downloads - an impressive amount for the app in question, which is none other than PayPal.
