Doom Classic Available On The iPhone

I remember Doom. Having just discovered computers as a young child, I happily wasted countless hours blasting aliens and bashing my keyboard. Now, the great first person shooter that started it all is available for the iPhone. A reason to celebrate? Not really. From time to time, many of us avid gamers will replay games from the past in hopes of recapturing some of the nostalgic enjoyment that was inseparable from our childhood. Unfortunately, most of us quickly realize that you can never go back. The classic Doom looks so dated now, that it hurts my eyes. Placing the same old game on the iPhone doesn’t make it any more tolerable. An old and forgotten game on a new platform doesn’t really increase the fun factor in my book. Am I a huge fan of playing video games on the…

New Web App Service for the iPhone

Steve Sheraton, creator of the iPhone app iBeer, has unveiled a new service that will allow iPhone users to download applications from outside the App Store. This service is completely legal and can be used by iPhone users who have not unlocked their devices. Some have decreed the Sheraton is a magician, when in reality, all he is really doing is allowing users to bookmark web applications based out of his Your App Shop. The user presses the icon on his iPhone and a web page opens up that can function as an application. While there is nothing wrong with doing this, it can’t be deemed a ‘bypass’ to the App Store. I am not saying that Sheraton is doing something wrong. On the contrary, the Your App Shop does carry merit and could possibly blossom into an excellent…

New Final Fantasy Game for the iPhone

Could a new Final Fantasy game be headed for the iPhone in 2010? Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi reveals that his studio, Mistwalker, is planning on creating a new Final Fantasy installment for the iPhone. For those of you who are not familiar with Final Fantasy, it is probably the most popular RPG series ever made for the console. With gorgeous graphics and enthralling game play, Final Fantasy has become the barometer by which other video games are judged. We are crossing our fingers that this so called iPhone project is not a reincarnation of a console game, but rather a unique creation that is designed for the iPhone only. The iPhone’s unique advantages and disadvantages indicate that specialization, rather than recreation is recommended. Nevertheless, we…

    China Unicom Sells 300,000 iPhones

China Unicom has proudly boasted that it has sold over 300,000 iPhones since its launch last month. A general manger quoted the figure but did not provide concrete evidence to support his claim. Sales for the iPhone in China started slowly out of the gate, with only a few thousand units being sold in the first week. However, an aggressive and intensive marketing campaign by Chain Unicom, which included a road show travelling around the country, has helped increase the amount of sales. We are also positive that the communist government of China strong armed a few wealthy individuals into buying what is generally considered a very expensive phone by the locals. (The iPhone sells for over $1000 USD in China.) There is also the possibility that the Chinese Government…

    iPhone Service Problems in London

Now that AT&T has admitted to being a totally incompetent carrier, its British counterpart, O2, has followed suit. An O2 executive acknowledged that iPhone customers in London have suffered from poor service due to increased data usage on the O2 network. Britain’s leading carrier whined that data usage on its network has skyrocketed and that it is installing 200 additional towers to cope with the demand. While Apple is probably to blame somewhere in this whole fiasco, the fact that a second carrier has suffered from these iPhone related problems indicates that carriers are not fully prepared for the downloading maniacs that purchase the iPhone. Let’s face facts people. The iPhone is great for downloading and millions of users are spending more time downloading on their…

iPhone No Longer Available in New York City

After years of covering the mobile industry, I was absolutely certain that I had seen all of the lows that wireless has to offer. (That doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of highs.) But this new tidbit of information has even left me shocked and flabbergasted. AT&T will no longer be offering the iPhone in New York City. Take a minute to digest that before continuing to read. AT&T has informed the public that the reason they are no longer offering the iPhone in the Big Apple is because New York is not ‘ready’ for the iPhone. What the hell does that mean?! By not ready, AT&T is referring to the fact that there are not enough towers in the New York area. There are two problems with this whole fiasco. 1) AT&T is to blame for its network woes and not New York. 2) What is…

Bold App Predictions by Mobile ‘Experts’

Predictions in the mobile industry have become somewhat of a national pastime in the United Sates, with everyone, their mother, and their dog Chuckles, making predictions about 2010. Most of these predictions are thrown about casually like a stripper and her crotch less panties. This time, the guilty party is a mobile analytics firm called Flurry. Flurry CEO Simon Khalaf boldly predicts that the Android Market will boast about 150,000 applications by the end of next year, while the Apo Store will offer about twice that amount. If we look at percentages, this predication indicates a massive increase in the amount of Android application offered when compared to Apple. Of course, these predictions are always suspect at the best of times. Too often have me seen bold…

    iPhone Burned on SNL

There is nothing more pathetic than the pathetic making fun of the pathetic. But that is exactly what has happened according to several recent reports by the mobile blogosphere. Saturday Night Live, a show that should have been kicked off the air years ago, made a joke about the poor reception that iPhone users encounter. Does iPhone reception suck? You bet it does. Is Saturday Night Live funny? You bet it’s not. Nevertheless, I am sure that many an iPhone user cringed after the iPhone joke was told. The fact that the iPhone’s reception problems have reached mainstream media should serve as a warning to both Apple and AT&T. Speaking of AT&T; the rather inept carrier was not mentioned. This highlights the fact that the reception problems with the iPhone are blamed on…

    New IT Job Board App

Individuals in the IT industry who are located in the UK can now take advantage of a new application created by IT Job Board. This useful new app can help unemployed or employed and disgruntled IT workers find a job more easily. IT Job Board allows users to search a database of over 20,000 jobs, though with the way Prime Minister Gordon Brown is eliminating jobs in the private sector, there may not be 2,000 jobs left, let alone 20,000. IT Job Board can sort jobs by salary, location and several other factors that will greatly aid in navigating through the countless jobs listings available. You can even save the most applicable job postings and send them to your inbox. Of course, an even better feature would be job listings outside of the EU. With the way the EU is…

New Picture App for the iPhone

Beanheads Consulting has released a new picture app for the iPhone and iPod Touch called Sort Shots. Sort Shots is designed to save users time by aiding them in find the pictures they are looking for instead having to scroll about, rifling through hundreds of pictures they may have stored on their iPhone. Sort Shots also allows iPhone users to create a slideshow of their pictures and even helps to upload photos to social media services such as Facebook and Twitter. At only $2.99 USD, Sort Shots sounds like an affordable and practical application. It does continue the trend of good apps that magnify the weaknesses of the iPhone unfortunately. Would someone please explain to me why we even need an application like this, when Apple could have easily built such a service…
