The iPhone coming to South Korea

The telecommunications regulator in South Korea has approved the sale of the iPhone. Korean carrier KT Corp, the country’s second largest carrier, has promised to start taking pre-orders on the internet later this month. South Korea is the last major industrialized nation to get the iPhone, with fellow Asian country China selling the iPhone as of last month. One of the reasons non of the South Korean carriers offered the iPhone officially up to this point, is because of a government policy that phones must provide a certain standard of location based services and maps. This obstacle has apparently been solved however, with the South Korean regulator allowing local carriers to handle this requirement on Apple’s behalf. While this foray into South Korea is good in theory,…

Google Earth 2.0 for the iPhone

Google is certainly an endless machine that churns out new and improved software and services on an almost daily basis. Google Earth 2.0 for the iPhone is certainly a continuation of this successful trend. Google Earth 2.0 is now available in seven languages and wields a new and improved interface, making navigating and selection much easier. Reports have surfaced that more than 220,000 users have left comments and thoughts about the app. This of course includes comments such as ‘Thanks’, ‘You Rock’ and ‘I love Yahoo’. This should not diminish such an unprecedented accomplishment, as 220,000 is still an astronomical number. Kudos to Apple for agreeing to add a Google app to its App Store. After the whole Google Voice fiasco, we weren’t sure if that would happen. On a…

New Plastic Surgery App for the iPhone

A business oriented, and possible nut job, plastic surgeon out of Nebraska (A cornhusker plastic surgeon?) is offering plastic surgery advice via his new iPhone app. Users can get advice and even set up a consultation with the Doctor of shallow himself, one Steven M. Denenberg M.D. (The M.D. part is certainly debatable.) But the biggest thorn of this whole crap app fiasco is the 99 cent cost for downloading this app. It costs money to get a consultation or some general information about plastic surgery? Since when? I guess all the corn and college basketball have had some serious repercussions on the good doctor's thinking. My original observation of ‘business oriented’ may have been a fallacy. The whole point Doc is to get people to download your app for free and then…

Apple Releases iPhone 3.1 OS and iTunes 9

Apple has just released iTunes 9 and the iPhone 3.1 OS. The ‘Rotten Apples’ were proudly displaying their latest upgrade, reminding those present they their product was vastly superior to anything else on the market and that they had huge male sexual organs. (Perhaps they didn’t make mention of the latter, but they would if they could.) The main feature of the iPhone 3.1 OS is something called the Genius function. The Genius function recommends apps to users according to their download habits. Essentially, the main feature of OS 3.1 is for users to spend more and for Apple to make more money. iTunes 9 will allow users to manage their apps in iTunes, thus indicating that there is some validity to the upgrade, unlike the 3.1. I almost dropped my Latte when I discovered…

    AT&T Acknowledges Poor Service Complaints

In a rather pathetic attempt to get angry subscribers of their back, AT&T has launched a video about how they are upgrading their base stations to enable the massive flood of data that has washed over their network because of iPhone usage. The video was brought to us by some tech nerd called Seth the blogger guy. This mobile guru openly admits to be affiliated with AT&T – thus awarding him with zero credibility. Far better to have used an impartial blogger, though we’re guessing AT&T wouldn't have liked an objective response. In order to shadow their short comings, AT&T added in the video that MMS would be arriving on the 25th of September. Sorry AT&T, but that doesn’t make up for it. You have provided users with poor service for years and have ridden the coattails of…

GTA Coming to the iPhone This Fall

Grand Theft Auto is going Asian with the announcement that the hit Nintendo DS game GTA: Chinatown Wars is heading for the iPhone. You play Wang, a Shanghai street sweeper that has come to America to seek his fortune. Armed with magical chopsticks, stale fortune cookies and poisonous Dim Sum, Wang must take control of the Chinese Underworld or start his own driving school – both guaranteed to cause mayhem and havoc on innocent bystanders. Ok, so I'm joking a bit. Rockstar has not released any information about Chinatown Wars except that there will be some sort of on screen joystick for iPhone users. The game is scheduled for release in the fall for the iPhone and iTouch, as well as the PSP in October. GTA is one of the most addictive video game franchises ever created…

    Crap App Alert: Bell Widget

Another crap app has been sighted in the App Store. The culprit is known as Bell Widget and is designed to do what it’s called – ring a bell. This crap app has three distinct bells that can be used for whatever reason you see fit. There is a regular bell, a gong and a cowbell. What is the point of this app? To make ringing noises? While Bell Widget certainly does not fall into the hall of shame category, that is currently sporting the likes of the Fart App, I am Rich and create your own pile of crap app, it is pretty damn close. Some may argue that it could replace a real bell. I counter with the ideology that if you want to ring a bell, then ring a god damn real bell. What the hell is next? A thank you app that says thank you so you don’t have to? Some apps are…

    Apple Heads to China

The iPhone is heading to China. From the rice paddies to Shanghai skyscrapers, citizens of the last true bastion of communism can now enjoy the iPhone like the rest of the world – albeit minus WiFi. Apple has signed a three year non-exclusive deal with the Chinese carrier China Unicom. China Unicom has an astonishing 141 million subscribers – only a small portion of the massive Chinese market. Good for Apple? Yes if the Chinese embrace the iPhone. The question is, without WiFi and serious intervention when it comes to Big Brother and the App Store, one wonders of the Chinese might get a little miffed at these restrictions. Even the iPhone fails in the largest market in the world; there is no way that Apple can really lose. With such a huge number of mobile phone users,…

SimCity for the iPhone and iPod Touch

SimCity, the classic city management game is now available on the iPhone and iPod Touch. SimCity gives you total and absolute authorities over an entire city, as you govern and dictate the lives of thousands of Sims on a grand scale. Build neighborhoods and infrastructure, as well as essential city services to ensure that your constituents have the best standard of living possible. The iPhone version of this timeless PC classic does have a few bugs, but is still a bargain at a measly five dollars. As with many games for the iPhone and iPod, we must question how the small screen and limited controls allow for the smooth play of a game filled with so much micromanagement. Personally, I remember needing every inch of computer screen in order to play the game properly,…

Gangsta: West Coast Hustle for the iPhone

A Grand Theft Auto clone is out for the iPhone. The game that allowed us to delve into our criminal selves is now available on the very small screen, and for only $6.99. The game, appropriately named Gangsta: West Coast Hustle, takes place in LA, where you play a former gangbanger who has come to reclaim his rightful place in the city’s underworld. There is plenty of illegal activity of questionable morality taking place over six chapters. Players get to steal cars, mingle with prostitutes, shake down drug dealers and do just about everything else a gangbanger does to earn his daily bread. How in the world Apple approved such an app is best left for sages and those of questionable sanity. Sex, violence, drugs and other related activities are usually frowned upon by the…
