Sprint and Clearwire reach $12 billion WiMAX deal

Talk about on again, off again, but it appears that finally, Sprint and Clearwire are going to get the whole WiMAX thing going. Not without the help from numerous corporate investors though. These investments come from the likes of Comcast, Google, Time Warner, and Intel, who had already invested in Clearwire. Smaller cable provide Bright House, contributed as well. Despite all of the investors in on the deal, this show will be run by Clearwire. Sprint is merging it’s mobile broadband division directly with Clearwire. Clearwire takes the reigns though, as acting directors of Clearwire, will remain in control of the new venture. Furthermore, the operation keeps the name of Clearwire. The cable providers will be allowed to rebrand and resell the service under some to be

Two Companies to sell iPhone in Italy

Telecommunications companies Vodafone and Telecom Italia will sell the Apple iPhone in Italy. Previously, Apple only allowed one company to sell its popular device in any national market. Exclusive franchise deals that lets Apple share service provider profits were struck with AT&T in the United States, O2 in Britain, Orange in France and Deutsche Telekom in Germany. Vodafone and Telecom Italia haven’t said much about the agreement they struck with Apple.
“Telecom Italia announced today it has signed a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Italy later this year,” was all that the Italian group had to say on Tuesday. Vodafone plans to sell the iPhone in ten countries by the end of this year. “Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic,

More from Vodafone: iPhone gets the Vodafone treatment

Vodafone announced they have signed an agreement with Apple to sell the controversial handset in as many as 10 countries where Voda have coverage. Those countries include Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. No word on Spain yet - one the few large European countries that are still not getting an official carrier for the iPhone. May be it's not Vodafone that's going to offer the iPhone there. You've probably already heard that Canada will also be having the iPhone through Rogers - so this all sounds like a major expansion for the device is being planned out. As major as this news is, it took the Vodafone PR team not one but a total of two sentences to announce the news - no specifics about a release

Screen Grabs: Nokia's N95 appears to appear on the small screen

Screen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com. What say you? Is resident Big Bang Theory brainiac Howard Wolowitz super-stoked that Penny is conked out on his shoulder? Or is he just incredibly jovial to have his hand around what appears to be a Nokia N95? We're thinking a little bit from column A, a little bit from column B.

T-Mobile parent mulling Sprint takeover?

T-Mobile's parent company Deutsche Telekom is seriously considering merging with or taking over Sprint, claims the German national magazine Der Spiegel. A continued weakening of US currency values, combined with worsening results at Sprint, is reportedly leading the European company to investigate transactions that would help T-Mobile USA gain ground in the US market and better compete against AT&T. The opportunity is rare and would cost Deutsche Telekom less than it did to buy VoiceStream in 2001 and assume its role as one of the largest American carriers, according to the report. There are no formal proceedings in place, say the alleged sources for the transaction, and a deal may not occur. Officials at Deutsche Telekom have declined to comment on "market

Official HTC Touch Diamond shots leaked

HTC's Touch Diamond smartphone has been all but completely revealed today through a set of photos leaked today by NewsMobile. The sequel to the original Touch is now known to earn its Diamond name through a subtle, angular geometry on the back that recalls Nokia's Prism lineup. The Diamond will also be narrower than the original, but will also be taller courtesy of dedicated Back and Home buttons alongside the control pad. The shots also appear to confirm specifications of the touchscreen phone, including a built-in 4GB of storage, a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus, and a front video camera that will work with video calls. This and past reports also point to 7.2Mbps 3G Internet support, a sharper 640x480 screen courtesy of Windows Mobile 6.1, and such extras as an

Beijing's Gigantic LED Wall Is Fully Solar Powered

Say what you will about the fiascoes leading up to the Beijing Olympics, but the event has brought along with it some amazing new architecture. Greeting visitors attending the Xicui entertainment complex near the site of the games is a 20,000 square foot wall of computer-controlled LEDs, the largest of its kind ever built. Better yet, the wall manages to power itself completely using only the sun.
The GreenPix Zero Energy Media Wall, designed by Simon Giostra & Partners and Arup, uses thousands of solar capture cells attached to each of its glass panels to charge up during the day and then release dazzling light shows at night. It's the first time perforated photovoltaics laminated in glass have ever been used in a building in China, but if all goes off without a

Google On The iPhone Spreads To 30+ Countries

Google's interface for the iPhone has been floating around America for a while, but in what is sure to be a welcome development, the search giant is now making it available in over 30 different markets and 15 new languages. A special iPhone-appropriate edition of Google News is spreading as well. Google On The iPhone Goes InternationalSince the iPhone is so popular - there have been reports of both strong legal sales in Europe and less-than-official shipments heading elsewhere - it would be foolish for Google to ignore the device. Google (along with most competing companies) is struggling to find an audience in the mobile market, even as it creates talk of monopolies in other areas. Early mobile adopters like iPhone users deserve special attention. So Google on the
