Steve Sheraton, creator of the iPhone app iBeer, has unveiled a new service that will allow iPhone users to download applications from outside the App Store. This service is completely legal and can be used by iPhone users who have not unlocked their devices. Some have decreed the Sheraton is a magician, when in reality, all he is really doing is allowing users to bookmark web applications based out of his Your App Shop. The user presses the icon on his iPhone and a web page opens up that can function as an application. While there is nothing wrong with doing this, it can’t be deemed a ‘bypass’ to the App Store. I am not saying that Sheraton is doing something wrong. On the contrary, the Your App Shop does carry merit and could possibly blossom into an excellent alternative. Let’s not call him a magician however, as this service is more comparable to a cheap street illusionist, than anything that Copperfield might do. Nevertheless, we wish Sheraton all the best with his new endeavor.
