The iPhone is heading to China. From the rice paddies to Shanghai skyscrapers, citizens of the last true bastion of communism can now enjoy the iPhone like the rest of the world – albeit minus WiFi. Apple has signed a three year non-exclusive deal with the Chinese carrier China Unicom. China Unicom has an astonishing 141 million subscribers – only a small portion of the massive Chinese market. Good for Apple? Yes if the Chinese embrace the iPhone. The question is, without WiFi and serious intervention when it comes to Big Brother and the App Store, one wonders of the Chinese might get a little miffed at these restrictions. Even the iPhone fails in the largest market in the world; there is no way that Apple can really lose. With such a huge number of mobile phone users, even a small market share will ensure that Apple turns a profit. Perhaps that is the reason why Apple agreed to block WiFi access, a guaranteed deal breaker for subscribers in other countries.
