Crossbows Used to Smuggle Phones into Prisons

Criminals are a desperate lot, so it comes as no surprise that some ‘colleagues’ of those behind bars are using any means necessary in order to provide them with mobile phones. This latest charade has shady characters standing out side of prisons and firing the mobile device via a crossbow into the indented recipient’s cell. No word on how successful this new tactic has been, but it certainly is a source of some humor. Mobile phones are banned from many prisons in the Western World and ‘guests’ of those prisons covet the devices in order to communicate with the outside world. Some inmates have complained that denying them the use of cell phones is against the law. However, most of these ‘innocent’ individuals are not interested in calling their grandmother on her…

Pre and Pixi Coming to AT&T

In a desperate attempt to avoid corporate death, Palm is whoring themselves out to the highest bidder. Word out of America has the Pre and Pixi handsets heading to AT&T and from across the pond, it appears that British carrier O2 will also be offering the devices. All this comes as Palm has officially acknowledged that they are fast approaching financial ruin and that any buyout offers made will be considered. The Pre and Pixi on their own are actually sound pieces of technology, but a crowded market and superior alternatives at comparable prices have doomed both devices and perhaps Palm as well. The Pre and Pixi phones will be available from AT&T for $150 and $50 respectively after mail-in rebate. Palm was once a leader in wireless technology, but is in danger of…

    Palm on Life Support

Palm appears to be down for the count. This was confirmed by Palm CEO Jon Rubenstein last week when he stated that Palm would be listening to reasonable acquisition offers. This downward trend has been plaguing Palm for several years now. Once a pioneer in wireless technology, the company has failed to keep pace with the competition over the last several years. Palm was praying for a successful endeavor with the Palm and Pixi handsets, but sales and revenue have been below expectations. It was reported that Palm was only able to sell roughly 50% of the units shipped to distributors. At this point, it is unclear which players in the market will be gunning for the Palm franchise. Microsoft is a possibility and some experts believe that an acquisition is likely to come…

    HTC Answers Apple

HTC is ready to trade blows with Apple in the courtroom. While the snubbing of Apple’s recent patent infringement lawsuit against the company was expected, HTC has dropped a hint that they are perfectly willing to return the favor to Apple in the form of a counter suit. “HTC disagrees with Apple’s actions and will fully defend itself. HTC strongly advocates intellectual property protection and will continue to respect other innovators and their technologies as we have always done, but we will continue to embrace competition through our own innovation as a healthy way for consumers to get the best mobile experience possible,” said Peter Chou, chief executive officer, HTC Corporation. ‘Strongly advocates intellectual property protection’ has been taken as some in the…

    Nexus One Coming to Sprint

Everyone and their mother are selling the Nexus One apparently. The next merchant to launch Google’s phone will be Sprint. No word of price or date of availability has been revealed, but Sprint execs are already experiencing outrageous orgasms. "Nexus One is a powerful device that belongs on a powerful network,” said Fared Adib, Sprint vice president of product development. Unlike Apple, Google doesn’t give two steaming mounds of dog crap about who sells their products. Their motto has always been to flood the market until you simply cannot ignore their product or service any longer. Sprint will join T-Mobile and AT&T as the third carrier to offer the Nexus One in the United States. The Nexus One supports the Android 2.1 operating system and has received mostly…

    Apple Bans Screen Protectors

Reports from several prominent Apple related blogs have stated that the mobile manufacturer will not longer be selling screen protectors in its retail locations. The new policy by Apple has raised several eyebrows in the mobile industry. Apple has not provided official statement for this new policy, but speculation has it that they don’t want consumers to believe that the iPhone screen is not durable enough to stand the riggers of day to day turbulence and mishap. Unofficial retailers will continue to provide screen savers to customers. While there may be some logic behind Apple’s move, it is another clear example of Apple’s policy, which is ‘we know better than you’. This is in line with the iTunes, App Store and just about every other creation that Apple has ever…

    Motorola CLIQ XT Available Tomorrow

A new Android powered handset will become available via T-Mobile tomorrow, March 17. The device in question is called the Motorola CLIQ XT, and will run users who are willing to sign their soul over to the carrier for two years for a total of one hundred bucks. Those wishing to purchase the device without signing a deal with the devil will have to fork over three times that amount. The Motorola CLIQ XT is likely to receive the upgrade to Android 2.1 which will be appealing to users who care. This Android phenomenon has become a huge tidal wave that doesn’t appear to be letting up any time soon. This has always been the Google way. We will flood the market with our product until people don’t have a choice but to use it. Thankfully, Google’s service is generally a…

Free Calls on St. Patrick’s Day

Truphone, a VoIP provider similar to Skype, is offering free calls on St. Patrick’s Day to five different countries. The first country is Ireland, the home of green beer and weak guts. Users can call Ireland for free on St. Patrick’s Day. The second country is the UK. The dreaded oppressor of the Irish for many years, those in the once great colonel super power can be called on their landline for free. The United States is the third country and the favored destination of the Irish. The question always arises regarding how long should Irish Americans be considered Irish? But in reality, who cares. Free calls to both landline and mobile. The fourth country is Canada. Home to many frozen Irishmen, Canada is the home of ice wine and frozen beer that is the delight of any…

Samsung to Release Slate This Year

With the hype surrounding the iPad, it was only a matter of time before rumor and hype regarding slates and tablets from other manufacturers would begin to pick up steam in the rumor mill. According to Emmanuele Silanesu, an executive over at Samsung, the tech giant will be releasing a slate type device in the second half of 2010. There is nothing confirmed as of yet regarding this incarnation, but some speculate that the device would be using an Intel Atom processor. Several other prominent companies have announced that they will be releasing a device similar to the iPad this year. This could be a death sentence for Apple, as the company could attribute much of their previous success on being the only major player in their market niche for an extended period of time.…

    BlackBerry Slider Coming to Sprint

More rumors are gaining momentum in the mobile industry. This time they are emanating from the frosty north of Canada. Research in Motion, (RIM) creator of the beloved BlackBerry, is supposedly working on a slider phone that will be offered via Sprint. No release date has been revealed as of yet, along with the name of the device. Apparently, the slider is not attached to the Bold series of phones, or any other offering by RIM thus far. One tidbit of information that has been confirmed is that there will be a GSM/HSPA version of the new BlackBerry slider that will include 850/1900MHz UMTS bands. These bands are required in order to use the device with AT&T and Rogers networks. Sprint is naturally looking to bolster its lineup of phones, which some critics feel was a bit…
