    Fins Remain Loyal to Nokia

Fins, known for being some of the most docile and obedient lemmings in the world, love their Nokia handsets. A recent study by the Helsinki University of Technology revealed that 90% of the devices currently used in Finland belong to Nokia. There are two major reasons for this. 1) Loyalty. People in Finland don’t have much, but dammit, they have a mobile manufacturer! 2) The price for Nokia devices is probably slightly lower than the competition in Finland. This is not taking away from the fact that Nokia still makes good mobile phones, but 90% is far too high a number without some form of voluntary or involuntary protectionism. It does not require wild imaginative traits to picture a commercial on Finnish TV encouraging locals to purchase Nokia devices in order to keep…

    HP to Release webOS Slate?

Looks like things are moving pretty fast in HP land. After the purchase of struggling mobile firm Palm, HP is rumored to be releasing a new webOS powered slate in Q3 of this year. Codenamed Hurricane, (See HTC? It’s not that difficult to come up with a decent name for a device) the new slate is apparently the replacement of the recently axed HP slate. While some, including myself, thought that the main reason HP purchased Palm was for its patents, it turns out that HP secretly coveted the webOS for its new iPad competitor. No price or technical specifications have been released at this time and all of this information should be treated as unofficial. Almost all major technology firms are set to release a slate type device this year. It is amazing how confident major…

    Motorola Purchases Azingo

Mobile manufacturer Motorola has increased its holdings in the mobile operating system market. Motorola has purchased a company called Azingo, which specializes in Linux based mobile operating systems. This move has raised some eyebrows, as Motorola’s partnership with Google and the Android OS was responsible for the Motorola Droid, considered by many to be the mobile device of the year. Towering sales figures of the Droid and the tidal wave of market penetration by the Android OS made most analysts assume that Motorola and Google would remain in bed together for a considerable length of time. A Motorola executive has mentioned that it would be ideal for the company to possess its own operating system however. Could Motorola be planning to separate from the Android, or…

Rupert Murdoch Happy with the WSJ on the iPad

Media despot Rupert Murdoch has informed his evil league of shareholders that the Wall Street Journal has thus far been more profitable on the iPad than on the Amazon Kindle. Lord Murdoch has revealed that WSJ currently has 64,000 iPad subscribers who are forking over $18 a month for the privilege of reading the newspaper. Murdoch makes this sound as if he has accomplished the incredible. Of course the WSJ is more popular on the iPad than on the Kindle. The iPad has a larger screen and better resolution, making it ideal for newspapers and magazines. It is ebooks that are the problem for the iPad. The Kindle screen is more forgiving on the eyes and obviously reading a book involves longer stretches of use and more concentration than glancing at the headlines of the WSJ.…

    SkyMall Coming to the BlackBerry

SkyMall Mobile is now available on the BlackBerry. This free application can be downloaded from BlackBerry App World for free or from the SkyMall Mobile website. The application was created in part by a company called Digby, which specializes in mobile commerce solutions. Users will have access to an immense catalogue of over 10,000 items that can be purchased securely, directly via the application. The COO of SkyMall, Jay Scannell, was quick to hype his service by saying, ‘these mobile capabilities give our customers even greater flexibility in how they browse and purchase SkyMall products. The BlackBerry application was a natural step for us to take in delivering convenience and additional shopping options to our customers.’ Digby CEO Dave Sikora echoed this thought. …

More Crap from the Mobile Blogosphere

Sometimes I honestly believe that mobile and tech bloggers are the dumbest animal in the world. Every single day we are bombarded with more and more useless statistics. Softpedia.com recently reported that worldwide shipments of cell phones reached 300 million in the first quarter of this year. Who can honestly say that this number means anything anymore? We get that people love their phones, but to keep hashing out data like some of us are still non-believers is simply redundant. Next thing you know, some miserable blogger will report that of the 300 million devices shipped, 90% of them come with a camera. Some idiot even reported that despite the ash clouds over Europe, the 300 million mark was reached – as if this was his own personal triumph. Last I checked, you…

    Palm to Release New webOS

The recently purchased Palm is looking ahead and the first thing on the agenda is the release of a new webOS. The Sunnyvale based mobile manufacturer, recently purchased by corporate giant HP, has announced that a new version of their webOS mobile operating system should be released in the next several weeks. ‘The next version of webOS is coming soon. You will receive an email alert in early May announcing the availability of an SDK release candidate. Please be prepared to begin testing your apps right away. Because the scope of the changes in this update is limited, we won't be going through a full SDK beta cycle,” stated Palm in a recent press release. Palm was purchased by HP for $1.2 billion; several months after CEO Jon Rubenstein admitted that his company was in…

Longoria and Beckham Advertise LG Phones

Mankind has been using sex to sell for millennia. Yet another instance of such trashy and scandalous tactics was reported recently when LG announced that they would be using Eva Longoria and Victoria Beckham to promote their newest handsets. The devices in question are the LG Lotus Elite and Rumor Touch. The two sluts…. I mean celebs, will be hosting a gala as part of the advertising campaign. LG is banking that some weak willed men and misguided women will purchase the Lotus Elite and Rumor Touch. The two phones will cost a little under $100, after the vicious sodomy of a two year contract. Both phones will be available via Sprint and are the successors of the LG Lotus and LG Rumor. While I am a big fan of both Longoria and Beckham, their association will not cause me…

    Twitter Available for the Android

Apparently Twitter is now available for those with Android 2.1. I say apparently because I really didn't investigate the matter fully. The reason is because I firmly believe that Twitter is a waste of time. That being said, those who have tried it are ranting and raving about its functionality. It is fully cohesive with Facebook (anther application that needs to be put to the sword) and also offers an open-source API. A review from the blogosphere reports: 'Reading tweets is easy in a bunch of places on your phone. Quickly access your timeline with the home screen widget, view a tweet location on a map, and see your friend’s latest tweet in your phonebook, GoogleTalk list or any application that uses Android’s QuickContact bar.' Those with less than Android 2.1. will…

AT&T Limits 3G Use on the iPad

iPad users were dealt a major blow when AT&T announced that it was going to limit some of the 3G streaming services available. Notably, ABC and Netflix, with the former being blocked and the latter being downscaled. Even YouTube videos will only stream at minimal resolution. This is a massive blow for Apple and iPad users. AT&T can claim bandwidth issues until tomorrow, but a service like Netflix is one of the main reasons to purchase something like an iPad and forcing users to Wi-Fi instead of 3G is a major drawback. The biggest problem for Apple is that most iPad users do not differentiate between the 3G provider and the manufacturer. For them, both companies are the same, which means AT&T’s shortcomings become Apple’s shortcomings as well. Either AT&T needs to…
