Caution: 'Skin tenna' wireless signals creeps over human skin

Signal stopperCompact "patch" antennas that lie flat on the skin have been made before. But they make poor connectors because most of their signals travel away from the body, not along it.
Mast-style 'monopole' antennas like those on cars are better at transmitting laterally. But still transmit upwards too.
Now, Scanlon and Conway have designed a version that that channels much more of its signal sideways by taking advantage of the "creeping wave" effect that allows waves to travel along a surface. The same effect is responsible for both a person's ears hearing a sound only directed at one side of their head.
Flipped mastMonopole antennas stand on a plate of conductive material – like a car roof – to reflect signals travelling downwards.

Sony Ericsson reveals Sharapova-themed phone cases

Sony Ericsson finished its week today with the launch of the Sharapova Design Collection, one of its first themed case lineups. The four cases are influenced by tennis player Maria Sharapova and were custom-designed by London fashion teams to be useful both inside and outside of sports. The Courtside Case and Exercise Case both attach to bags and arms respectively and keep the phone completely protected in less than ideal conditions; the Party Case and the Travel Case use handbag and wallet shapes that are more appropriate for after-hours. All of the cases should fit most Sony Ericsson phones as well as those from other manufacturers. The entire Design Collection ships to "all" markets sometime in the summer with prices that will vary by the area.

Philadelphia to Turn Free Wi-Fi back On

In 2005, EarthLink began an ambitious project that would bring free Wi-Fi to the citizens of Philadelphia. EarthLink quit its effort in May because of complaints about signal service. In a city of over a million people, only 6,000 signed up for the EarthLink service. A new group of investors announced that they would finish the project. Network Acquisition Company, a group made up of local investors, plans to finish the network, which is about 80% complete. Philadelphia is an American city that covers 135 square miles and has a citizenship of 1.4 million. Mayor Michael Nutter, quick to point out no public money is being used for the Wi-Fi project, hopes the city will see economic opportunities flow from increased Internet access. “We now have the potential to reach more

Wi-Lan Sues RIM, Motorola and UTStarcom

Wi-Lan, a Canadian technology licensing company, has filed patent infringement lawsuits against Research in Motion (RIM), Motorola and UTStarcom. The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division, and alleges that the companies’ mobile devices and other equipment infringe patents held by Wi-Lan. Specific damages or remedies were not included in the filing. Like many lawsuits of this type, it is impossible to determine an outcome at the start of the suit. Patent infringement cases are often very technical and can take years to litigate. Even more time can incur when the losing side decides to appeal the decision. Lower court judges, like federal district judges, will press for the sides to come to a settlement. Wi-Lan

Dear Shozu, Please Cut The Crap!!!

For a while, I had been content with the offerings of Nokia’s Share Online application. But the fact that it uploads to one service at a time, that it intruded to my Active Standby and that it gave me no option to uninstall it started to bother me day after day. And when Mark Jambas from Shozu commented on a post of mine saying that Shozu now offers an option to stop background processes (my main gripe, because I have an N95), I decided to give Shozu a chance to redeem itself. And redeem it did. I simply love it. Setting it up from the PC, uploading to many sites at once, launching it just when I want it,… the whole convenience was there. Right now, it is one of the first applications I install on any phone I have. But over the days, I started getting really annoyed by

Cellspin adds Twitter and Pownce support

Addicted to Twitter, but want to get a bit more creative with your tweets? Cellspin, a free mobile blogging application which allows users to blog text, video, audio, and photos to a big ol’ list of sites, has now added support for Twitter and Pownce. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get Cellspin to work at all on my S60 N78. I signed up for an account, added Twitter to my list of sites, and installed the application - all of which went perfectly smooth. From there, I couldn’t get it to actually post anything. The camera button behaved as expected (taking me to the photo snapping application) but regardless of what I did (snap photo and back out, snap photo and save, snap photo and upload to web, etc) I found myself back at the main menu rather than the posting screen. Same

New Firefox Mobile concept video looks amazing

If there was ever any doubt that Mozilla could pull off something amazing with Firefox Mobile, this video pretty much stomps all over it.
Aza Raskin, head of user experience for Mozilla Labs, put this user interface concept demo on his blog this morning. Simply put: it rocks my face off. Their idea for how to handle tabs just about annihilates everything we’ve seen from other mobile browsers thus far, and the idea of tying nav controls/tab access to horizontal panning as a means of maximizing screen real estate usage is ingenious. If they’re putting this much thought into the other aspects of Firefox Mobile, WebKit oughtta be shakin’ in its boots.

New York - Major Internet service providers Verizon (NYSE: VZ), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Sprint (NYSE: S) have agreed to block access to child pornography by eliminating access to child porn newsgroups, and purging their servers of any child porn websites, New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday. The companies will also collectively pay $1.1 million to fund additional efforts by the AG's office and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to remove child pornography from the Internet.
