    Samsung Galaxy S. Release Rumors

It is quite commonplace in the wireless industry for companies to release new devices slowly across the globe. Apple is chief in this terminology, often debuting a product in new countries over the span of several months. Apparently Samsung is not familiar with this line of thinking. The long anticipated Samsung Galaxy S. is rumored to become available in July in over 110 countries simultaneously. The Android powered phone will come with a Super AMOLED screen and a 5MP camera, along with a 1GHz processor. The rumors regarding the availability of the Samsung Galaxy S. are in line with previous rumors that speculated that the device will be available on all major U.S. carriers. While none of this has obviously been confirmed, the publication Korea IT Times firmly believes…

Dell to Release the Streak on June 4th

Get ready for war Apple. Carphone Warehouse and O2 across the pond have announced that they will begin to offer a new Dell slate as of June 2, called Streak. The Android powered tablet will be available for ‘free’ for those willing to either to make acommitment to a broadband contract or unlimited data contract, with both services costing between 25 GBP and 35 GBP a month respectively. The Dell Streak comes with a rather small 5.5 inch display, but does run Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1. Those wishing to purchase the Streak outright could do so for 429 GBP. Up until know, the iPad has not really encountered any competition. But unlike the iPhone, the iPad will not enjoy a grace period of almost two years. The longevity and practically of the iPad will be tested on several…

Holiday Inn Testing Smartphones as Keycards

The mega hotel chain Holiday Inn is in the process of testing a new service that would allow guests to use their Smartphones as keycards in order to access their room. The logic here is that people are less likely to lose their phones as opposed to their keycard. This initiative is in the experimental phase and will be tested at two Holiday Inn locations for 90 days. If this experiment is deemed successful, up to 20% of Holiday Inn locations will begin to offer this service. We should see a similar migration in other service industries as well, as more and more companies develop a way to improve their services via the Smartphone. Now if only actual human service at most hotels could improve, we would all be living in a Utopia. Something’s however, well never change…

FCC Trying to Ruin the Mobile Industry

The FCC, the undisputed leader of stupidity, has warned that it may have to intervene in what it describes as an uncompetitive mobile industry. A recent report by the FCC had dire concerns about the state of the mobile market in the United States. "Specifically, the report confirms something I have been warning about for years -- that competition has been dramatically eroded and is seriously endangered by continuing consolidation and concentration in our wireless markets," said Michael Copps, the FCC's commissioner. "Some things are not right." Michael Copps is an ignorant politician that wants to fix a machine that is functioning perfectly well. The mobile industry has paved the way in both technology and finances over the last three years. The…

    They’re All Smartphones

What is a Smartphone? Time after time I hear a reference to how the Smartphone has come a long way over the last several years and that more people than ever are turning their over their hard earned cash in order to fondle these advanced pieces of technology. There is just one problem with the Smartphone craze. The problem is that there is no such thing as a Smartphone. The definition of a Smartphone is an advanced phone. But what the heck does advanced phone mean? A phone that was labeled a Smartphone three years ago is obviously not in the Smartphone category anymore. Thus, it is logical to assume that more and more users are purchasing a Smartphone, because the majority of new phones are Smartphones. Due to the fact that we are not updating the definition of the…

Wireless Spectrum Auction Concludes in India

The insane and quite ridicules auction for the Wireless Spectrum in India has finally concluded. Total bids reached $11 billion with several companies attempting to stake their claim. The outrageous amount of money and interest that this auction has garnered should not come as too much of a surprise when we consider the insane ascension of the Indian wireless industry. As reported previously, more Indians have access to mobile phones than full functioning bathrooms. The Wireless Spectrum auctioned off by the Indian Government is geared towards high-speed data services that are required for mobile users in India to enjoy the next step in the country’s wireless evolution. While most of us certainly appreciate India’s addiction to wireless technology, we cannot help but…

    FCC to Combat Bill Shock

The FCC, coming to the aid of the average consumer for the first time, is looking at ways of preventing ‘bill shock’ for mobile customers. The new Consumer Task Force is considering a new initiative where carriers would warn consumers when they are about to incur high fees due to over usage of voice and data. Verizon, behaving like true corporate moguls, have defended their current system, which they believe provides users with all the billing information that they require. For once, I have to say that I am with big business. It is the responsibility of the consumer to keep track of their usage and service enrollments and not pin the blame on the wireless providers. Those who are uneasy should opt to use unlimited services and remove any potential landmines such as free…

Sprint Passes on the Nexus One

Sprint has officially passed on the Nexus One. This became apparent when Google removed all mention of Sprint Nexus One from the Nexus One website. "We are not bringing in Nexus One as EVO 4G is more robust in 3G markets and amazing in the growing number of 4G areas," said a Sprint spokesperson. The Nexus One is still available via T-Mobile and AT&T, but has generally been passed on by many wireless providers and consumers for more advanced HTC handsets. I often get the impression that consumers and business that are big fans of Google do not see such a move as real betrayal. The Android and HTC brands are intertwined in the eyes of the public and because the Android name is synonymous with Google, it is considered to be one and the same. In any case, the…

    China Outsources to India

Shocking news out of the Far East. China Wireless Technologies is opening a new R&D center in India. You know your country is pretty low on the totem pole when a Chinese business outsources to your country. China Wireless Technologies (CWT) has stated that the new plant will be open by 2012. While this move could certainly help CWT take advantage of the large tech workforce in India, it is a sad reality of how far India has fallen. For years we heard that India was a growing economy that was destined to become a giant on a world scale. Ten years afterwards and we find an India with horrendous poverty, abysmal standard of living and now, an outsource destination for China. More attention to human rights, infrastructure and social necessities should be on the minds of…

    SkyMall Coming to the BlackBerry

SkyMall Mobile is now available on the BlackBerry. This free application can be downloaded from BlackBerry App World for free or from the SkyMall Mobile website. The application was created in part by a company called Digby, which specializes in mobile commerce solutions. Users will have access to an immense catalogue of over 10,000 items that can be purchased securely, directly via the application. The COO of SkyMall, Jay Scannell, was quick to hype his service by saying, ‘these mobile capabilities give our customers even greater flexibility in how they browse and purchase SkyMall products. The BlackBerry application was a natural step for us to take in delivering convenience and additional shopping options to our customers.’ Digby CEO Dave Sikora echoed this thought. …
