Study Finds Comcast, Cox Interfering with File-Sharing Traffic

Along with known file-sharing traffic throttler Comcast (NASD: CMCSA), fellow broadband provider Cox Communications is also interfering with the usage of BitTorrent and similar peer-to-peer applications by its subscribers, the Associated Press reported, citing research conducted by German's Max Planck Institute for Software Systems. The study monitored over 8,000 Internet users worldwide, and found conclusive evidence of blocked file-sharing connections only by Comcast, Cox and Singapore's StarHub. it found that 62% of the 788 Comcast subscribers who participated in the study had connections blocked, along with 54% of Cox subscribers; the study also found evidence of blocking at seven other U.S. cable broadband ISPs, but not in the numbers seen at Comcast or Cox. LG, Samsung to Develop Mobile DTV Standard

LG and Samsung will collaborate on developing technology that they intend to propose for adoption as the mobile digital TV standard for the North American market. The combined technology will be presented to the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), the international organisation which is establishing broadcasting standards for digital television, before 2009, they said. "LG and Samsung are already world-class in digital TV and mobile communications, said LG President and Chief Technology Officer Woo Paik. Old / New Phone

They are getting older by the second. That massive batch of the baby boomer generation adults is about to become the largest group of elderly the world will ever see in its history. Companies are scrambling to come out with products and services to appeal to this post world war 2 generation of increasingly confused citizens. The “EMC” (easy mobile calling) phone by designer Matthias Pinkert might just be what the doctor ordered. This phone features four keys for direct calling, one-touch calling, GPS tracking, for when grandma is too loopy to tell where she is, a built in speaker phone and even comes with a laniard to wrap around(choke) grandma’s neck to avoid misplacing it in the refrigerator, next to the pickles.

T-Mobile makes Sidekick Slide Scarlet official

T-Mobile today opted for a weekend launch of the Sidekick Slide Scarlet, its first special variant of the Motorola-created messaging phone. The new model conspicuously changes the phone's trim from its original purple to a deeper red while keeping all of the features of the original: the Slide is still one of T-Mobile's smallest Sidekicks but offers the full feature set, including its 1.3-megapixel camera, EDGE Internet access, microSD storage up to 4GB, and dedicated AAC and MP3 playback. The phone continues to bridge some of the differences between smartphones and feature phones with a more advanced web browser and a multi-network instant messaging client. Pricing should stay in place for the Scarlet's launch today with the phone selling for $200 along with a two-year…

    Treo meets iPhone

There is soon to be a flood of new mobile phones to hit the street using Google’s new open source Android OS platform. RKS design consultants of southern California have just introduced their entry into this soon-to-be-ubiquitous mobile platform with this “Mimique” design. Touting its ability to be easily customizable, and looking very much like a Treo with an iPhone touch surface, this phone concept deserves some attention, but I can’t help feel that they really failed to find a unique aspect. What do you think?

    iDial iPhone Retro

So the iPhone's touch interface has helped propel it to the top of many people's wish lists, in addition to its stunning looks and overall hype despite the glaring lack of 3G connectivity, but what happens when you want to go back to the good old days of a rotary dial when making a call? That's the advantage of the iPhone's full touch screen display, with the iDial iPhone Retro application which allows you to dial phone numbers via a virtual rotary dial. Needless to say this is much slower than just punching some numbers, but at least it helps get your retro kicks in.

FCC clears i-mate Ulimate 8502 for duty in the US

i-mate's Ultimate lineup of mobile phones is definitely a mobile enthusiasts wet dream. At least in theory. With no US wireless carrier-support and nary an FCC seal of approval to speak of, i-mate hasn't exactly broken into the US high-end handset market. So, no matter how high-end the i-mate Ultimate lineup may be, there's just that little issue of getting the handset into consumer hands.
But, that may all change with the FCC's approval of the i-mate Ultimate 8502 Windows Mobile Professional-powered handset. As evidenced by the FCC's label to the right, the Ultimate 8502 has been cleared for duty in the US by the almighty FCC. The i-mate Ultimate 8502 boasts a veritable what's what of high-end mobile phone features that any true cellphone lover can appreciate.…

New international features coming to Twitterfone beta

Twitter is certainly usable via SMS on a mobile device, but typing messages on a phone is cumbersome. A service that converts voice to text and then posts it to Twitter could be a niche hit. A number of services have launched to allow users to record messages and link to the recording from Twitter (see Twitsay, Twittergram). And services like Jott and Spinvox are providing tools that allow voice to text conversion for Twitter, Facebook, Pownce and other social networks. But nothing I’ve seen so far is as simple to use as TwitterFone, a new service by serial Irish entrepreneur Pat Phelan. The service launched moments ago into private beta. To use it you need to verify your phone number and Twitter account, and TwitterFone will then give you a local phone number to call…

Sprint Mogul (6800) WM 6.1 ROM "leaked"

Oh sure, most people in the ROM cookign community know about this little story as there have been many, many variations with some form of WM 6.1 for a few months now. But it's a slow news day, so why not? Word is this ROM (3.49, radio 3.39.10) for Sprint is indeed the "almost official, but still technically beta" WM 6.1 update that many are expecting this summer from Sprint. Not too much in the way of changes though you get: WM 6.1 (latest test build for this device) HTC Large Start Menu Sprint TV Slightly faster
Plus all that RevA and GPS goodness from the earlier update.
The inside joke on this one is that Sprint "leaks" these updates now officially so the community can test out and fix the bugs for them. Either way, these "leaks"…
