Do We Really Need a 12MP Camera?

What happened to the days when cell phones were devices used for verbal communication? Granted, advances in technology have turned mobile phone concept into an information machine that knows no limits, but at its heart, it is still a phone. That may all change however with Sony Ericsson’s rumored launch of the Kokura – a 12 mega-pixel phone that may be released at the end of next year. In theory, a 12 mega pixel camera sounds pretty interesting, but it should be noted that cell manufacturers have been known for sacrificing industry standards in mechanical specs in order to make theme phones possible. The Kokura may turn into more of a camera with a phone attached, then the other way around and while this may add a whole no wave of mobile invention and creativity, it…

    Mobile Phone Stores Raided!

The British mobile cell phone NARC squad recently raided 42 establishments in West Sussex County. This crack British elite Special Forces unit bashed some heads and broke some fingers in an attempt to put a halt to unfair business practices being incorporated by some vendors. Ok, so maybe no bones were broken and maybe the unit conducting the raid was actually a bunch of bow tie wearing and pocket protector wielding Trading Standards investigators. Nevertheless, this does not mean that the investigators and the British government in general shouldn’t be applauded for protecting consumer rights. Apparently, the questionable merchants were employing bullish and tyrannical business practices like ‘No Refunds’ and other caveat emptor tactics that haven’t been seen in the…

Dwango to Unleash the World’s Longest Ringtone

For those of you have suspected that our friends in the land of the rising sun have too much time on their hands, then maybe this is finally the proof you need. While we could excuse phone teddy bears, iPhones made out of diamonds and cell phones that double as vibrators, this latest concoction will raise a few eye brows. A Japanese company called Dwango is attempting to break the Guinness Book of World Records with the longest ringtone ever made. Dwango boasts that their ringtone is over 61 minutes long. The actual content that will be played is unknown, but it will be interesting to see what they come up with. To be honest, I always thought that the Japanese were a little more technologically inclined than this. How hard could it be to make a 61 minute ringtone? I…

    Timberland Sued for Mobile Spam

Timberland has been sued and is offering $7 million dollars as a settlement. The eyebrow raising catch is the reason for the lawsuit. Timberland has been sued for spamming cell phone users. Now mobile men everywhere can beat their chests with pride after Timberland has admitted defeat by offering this hefty settlement. However, before customers start jumping up and down with happiness at what is perceived as a victory for the little guy, this lawsuit could have dire implications on the cell phone business that may harm the consumer in the near future. Cell phone manufacturers and carriers are banking that mobile advertisement will become their biggest cash cow and their entire business model is geared towards the advertising model. If carriers and other companies fear a…

The App Wars: Android vs. Apple

App developers everywhere are shouting out in unification, outraged by the irrational behavior of Apple towards third party software development. That slogan is “Never Again!” It shouldn’t surprise anyone that this cry of malcontent is a repeat of the Jewish promise made after WWII. Apple, behaving with some disturbing and outrageous Nazi ideology, has started banning apps from their App Store without any explanation. The latest is a podcast app that was shown the door – with the developer vowing to avenge this display of cruelty by defecting to the Android app store. It is amusing and quite disturbing that we can so easily draw similarities between the impending app store war and WWII. On one side we have Apple – a ruthless dictator that prides itself on order and…

Girls Gone Wild to Rock the Mobile World

Curves on a cell phone are one thing, but curves on a woman are a man’s best friend. (Sorry Lassie!) Zeal Entertainment, an Australian mobile content provider, has signed an exclusive agreement with Girls Gone Wild for mobile distribution outside the United States. Zeal is promising several new products that are sure to provide hours of breast filled fun for cell phone owners. Pornography and other related sexual content on the mobile is set to explode on a global scale. With the industry already worth an estimated two billion dollars and expected to reach about 15 billion in the next five years, it appears that Zeal Entertainment has capitalized on a golden opportunity. Now you too can see the next door neighbors’ drunken daughter wearing nothing but a hat and guzzling…

FireFox Mobile Browser to be released in 2010

FireFox, the ever popular and buggy internet browser, is set to make its mobile debut – in 2010. Yes Funtonians, it appears that mobile browsers are now like movies, in where the release date is often eons after the official announcement and where it is the customer’s children who are more likely to purchase the product when it comes out during their adulthood. Why did FireFox need to announce this new mobile browser so early? Perhaps they wanted us to pray daily and gain some mental toughness in anticipation for what is obviously going to be an over hyped release. Mozilla appears to be confident that they can crack the crowded mobile browser market – but with a PC browser that has gone from being the best to arguably being the worst, this confident attitude may be…

California Bans Cell Phone use by Train Operators

Train operators in California have been given a temporary ban on using cell phones while on duty. This limitation on cell phone use comes after investigators of the recent Los Angeles train wreck claim that the operator on duty was using his cell phone to text message instead of paying attention to the events transpiring at the time. We at Funtonia can only sadly laugh and shake our heads with despair. Why a temporary ban? There should not be any cell phone use of any kind allowed by conductors or train crew while they are working. Imagine if you were flying and discovered that the pilot was talking on his cell phone while trying to land the plane. You would either A) have a stroke, or B) attack the pilot, kill him and then politely ask the crew if there was anyone else…

    Europeans Getting the Mobile Shaft

O2, in an attempt sink its teeth into the flesh of its customers, is abandoning the 12 month cell phone contracts and instead, will be concentrating on 18 month plans. According to some sources, the 18 month cell phone plan is the most popular in Europe, with Hans, Jorge and Liam shying away from longer deals due to their constricting nature and the necessity to sell your soul to the devil…. I mean cell phones carriers. Mobile carriers in the world’s most cultured and egotistical region have tried to encourage (or bully) customers in to taking longer plans by offering better bundles and the newest handsets. This merciless strategy appears to have worked, with two year plans rising from 1% to about 5%. Where the heck is Viviane Reding when you need her? Could we see…

House Hunting with a Cell Phone

Being one of the unlucky souls hunting for an apartment in a big city, I stumbled upon an article at www.textually.org that gives a brief overview of several new mobile applications that could very well end up a savior for those with housing needs. Services such as Home Finder, Realtor.com, Terablitz and Trulia allow potential new how owners the luxury of house hunting on their mobile – even going as far as informing users of locations, directions and how to contact the realtor assigned to the property. Great stuff except it might make hunting for that dream condo that much harder. There could literally be dozens upon dozens of interested parties clawing and bushwhacking their way to landing the desired property. Sometimes too much information could be as much a…
