Usher to become Sony Ericsson Spokesman...

What do you do if your new album is slated to only sell 400,000 copies its first week when your last one sold 1.1 million its first week? Oh, and you have to compete with a hoard of songs by American Idol finalists on the singles chart? You soak ‘em, drown ‘em in your music. You check out what nutcase Mariah Carey did to promote her sales, and you find a way to go crazier. At least if you’re Usher, that’s what you do. Billboard.com announced yesterday Usher has inked a deal with Sony Ericsson to became the spokesman for the company’s new Walkman music phone to be released later this year. Translation: Usher will Sony Ericsson’s puppet in exchange for publicity. AT&T customers will have “access to exclusive content, contests to meet Usher on a video shoot and the chance…

Feminised gadgets: An eye for the ladylike

According to The Telegraph, women spend more on gadgets than they do on shoes - on average, ?391 ($771) a year. That's a total of ?17 billion ($33.5 billion). Not only that, they're also driving the uptake of online video and web TV. "The Japanese have long grasped the female approach to gadgets, and made a tidy profit from it. When Asian telecoms firm DoCoMo commissioned a woman to design a mobile internet service, she asked women what they wanted from their phones. It proceeded to launch the most successful mobile phone service ever - i-mode - and a range of slick "clamshell" handsets that set world standards. The (usually male) designers in the West scoffed - "too small", they said; "too feminine". Who needs cameras on mobile…

    Philips X800 and X-Connect are all-touch

Philips are obviously making a go at the high-end market, something they've been keeping away for quite some time. Today they've officially stepped up with two new handsets - the Philips X800 and the Philips Xenium X-Connect. The Philips X800 is a full touch-screen device with a large display, while the Philips Xenium X-Connect is a Windows Mobile-based device with an even bigger TFT display. Let's not waste any more time and delve into the specifics.
The Philips X800 is the first full-touch device by the China-based manufacturer. Images of the X800 already leaked a week ago but now it's the real deal - the device is officially announced. Windows Live for Nokia expanding availability

Windows Live for Nokia is a service that brings Live Contacts, Messenger, Hotmail, and Spaces to the Nokia S60 platform. While it has been available in many parts of the world for quite a while, the US and a number of other countries have been missing out. Today, Phil Holden announced on his blog that Windows Live for Nokia would be rolling out in 7 new markets, bringing the total up to 33. The markets joining the list today are Hungary, Iceland, India, Israel, Poland, Romania and the US (Comprehensive list after the jump). Don’t get too attached if you’re not looking to spend a few bucks; while the service will be free at first, it’ll eventually switch over to for-pay at some undetermined date.

MS Echoes would "get rid" of phone numbers

Microsoft has devised a strategy that would largely eliminate the need to use phone numbers for calling on cellphones, ZDNet says. Echoes would link a user's Windows Live Messenger contacts to a phone number through a cellular provider and would let cellphone users choose one of their IM contacts as the recipient; as information would be automatically linked between the two, users could place calls without ever knowing someone else's phone number, Microsoft claims. The information would be sent automatically to a phone's contact list without needing a dedicated instant messaging client. Importantly, the technology would also intelligently bridge standards when trying to reach someone who is only available through a PC. A standard voice call would register as a voice…

    Nokia Communication Center

We never fail to mention in our reviews that standard means of PC synchronization, that is, Microsoft Outlook, are not the best way to go – while Windows Mobile devices embrace a more or less passable system, Nokia’s smartphones and feature phones will make you go through a whole lot of trouble when synchronizing them with PC (primarily due to a different layout of entries and fields). A possible way-out are third-party applications (along the lines of Oxygen Phone Suite), however not just about every user is willing to pay for extra conveniences. That’s why the debut of Nokia Communication Center software package is a reasonable step in the right direction, and since it’s only beta as yet, we won’t be too harsh on it throughout this quick review.…

Virgin Mobile Festival Wild Card Special Edition

To celebrate the Virgin Mobile Festival coming up in August, Virgin and Kyocera are launching a limited run of the custom-themed Virgin Mobile Festival Wild Card Special Edition. Believe it not, that’s supposedly an abridged version the device’s full name: Virgin Mobile Festival Wild Card Special Edition Ultra Mobile Xtreme Deux Plus. Deluxe. They’re throwing in all kinds of perks with the purchase of this QWERTY clam shell: In addition to 50 eMusic downloads and a one year subscription to SPIN magazine, flashing the device at the festival will score you access to the Virgin Mobile Guest Lounge (although you’ll probably still need to buy your way into the festival itself), where Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson will purportedly be hanging out (read: probably not).…
