    Mobile Phone Alzheimer’s a Reality?

While the long term repercussions of mobile phone use still remain shrouded in mystery, several scientific studies have surfaced, bringing with them warnings and misgivings. One recent study at the Ben Gurion University tested the effects of mobile phone use on memory. The experiment included 48 right-handed men, solving a memory puzzle. One third of the men were asked to use a mobile phone on their left ear while attempting to solve the puzzle and their results were noticeably lower than those who used the phone on their right ear and those who did not use a phone at all. Regardless of the scientific infancy of the theory, we cannot dismiss the fact that not only do we not truly know the long term side effects of prolonged mobile phone use; we are also ignorant to when…

New Emergency Text Service Now Available

If the constant barrage of media penetrating our lives with all the doom and gloom possible wasn't enough, a new SMS service from CellPhones.org is now threatening to turn us all into raving lunatics. This real-time service will send a free SMS to subscribers (free as in you only pay the standard SMS rates) who can now be kept informed of the next apocalypse that will surely create an Armageddon some time in the distant future. (Or next week at the rate we’re going) While proponents of this service will argue that it is important to be kept up to date about the latest announcements from the WHO about Swine Flu, from the IMF about economic catastrophes and joke theft by Carlos Mencia, is there really a need for it? Being informed about things we have little or no control…

    New WiFi Finder App

A great new app called WeFi is now available for phones with Symbian, Android and Windows Mobile operating systems. WeFi is a very handy application which allows smartphones to increase their detection range when searching for WiFi hotspots and automatically selects the strongest signal available. Most smartphones have a limited detection range because manufacturers are interested in increasing the duration of battery life. WeFi is a very impressive idea, though one would assume that this may very well come at the expense of your battery life, as WeFi probably bypasses any manufacturer blocks in order to make it applicable. The best part of WeFi however, is its memory function. When a user finds a WiFi hotspot, WeFi will upload the information into its system, making…

    World’s First Solid Gold iPhone

Hungry children in Africa, Swine Flu raging out of control, an economy in the crapper, thousands losing their lives in Darfur, Brittany Spears making a comeback – all this negativity in the world is a direct result of the global economic crisis, yet someone had the audacity to create a 22 carat gold iPhone. Bless my weak socialist heart, but I think that creating an iPhone worth over 20 thousand Euros was one of the reasons we are now in this financial predicament. Pragmatic individuals will ask if there are any other special features that come with this ‘special’ iPhone. The answer is no. I find it rather humorous that a phone worth 20 thousand Euros has a rather shabby 2MP camera, but maybe it’s just me. This reminds me of the diamond iPhone that was made in Japan and…

BlackBerry Bold is now available in 3Stores

Starting today, the BlackBerry Bold will be available in 3Stores throughout the UK. 3 is selling the Bold at 30 pounds a unit and is promising 500 any network minutes, Windows Live, unlimited texts, internet, email and on and on. The only real problem 3 has with this entire promotion is the phone itself. BlackBerry users can blindly cheer RIM products along if they wish, but the Bold is a clear favorite for biggest disappointment so far this year. The Bold has a shabby touch screen, unfriendly interface and confusing OS, that will often leave even the most tech savvy user scratching their heads with confusion. For those of you desiring a Smartphone and not willing to join the misguided ranks of Bold users, I recommend the G1, which is superior to the Bold in almost…

    EU Slashes Roaming Charges

After having to endure years of ridicule for its lack of unity and cohesiveness, the EU has finally shocked all of us by actually passing a law that will benefit all of Europe and brings the members, who often resemble bickering school boys on the Football pitch, a little closer together. The new and significant law passed by the European Parliament slashes roaming charges for travelling Europeans in their continent. Starting July 1, wireless providers in Europe must cap data roaming charges at 1 Euro per minute and must now also charge customers by the second, after 30 seconds, when making roaming calls. The most significant change that this bill creates however is that wireless providers must now employ transparency in their billing by allowing customers to use a…

    Danielle Lloyd Sues Carphone Warehouse

Danielle Lloyd, a beauty queen, glamour girl and all around good slut from the great island of Britain, has sued Carphone Warehouse when it was discovered that raunchy pictures were stolen from her mobile. Apparently, a business savvy employee at CPW spotted some photos of Lloyd’s exposed melons after Lloyd left the phone for repairs. The distraught sexual vixen is seeking 50 thousand pounds in damages, for ‘shock’ and ‘distress’. While we at Funtonia can accept accidents, misunderstandings and occasional bouts of stupidity, (lord knows we go through several of those a day at the office) we can’t tolerate obviously flagrant attempts at cheap publicity. When I take my phone in for repairs, I double check that there is nothing on there that I do not want others to see.…

SMS Alert Service to go U.S. Wide

Three reputable companies in the wireless industry (Nixle LLC., VeriSign Messaging and Mobile Media) have teamed up to create a not so reputable service which allows local police departments to warn residents of impending doom in their neighborhood. Law enforcement in the United States plans on using this new ‘feature’ in the hopes of increasing connectivity and cohesiveness with local yokels. Residents will receive warnings of criminals in their area, traffic jams, Amber alerts and so forth. While the jury is still out on whether or not this service carries any merit, it has already raised several questions in the Funtonia offices. Questions surrounding the content in the text messages were raised. What happens if a sexual predator is on the prowl in your neighborhood?…

    An iPhone Without a Contract

This Thursday, AT&T will start to offer its most coveted handset contract free. The iPhone will be available with out the mandatory ball and chain contract, albeit for an extra $400. This now begs the question: Would you buy an iPhone for $599, if it meant that AT&T wouldn't be able to sink their paralyzing poisonous fangs into your flesh with a lengthy contract? On the surface, it does not appear that the iPhone is worth almost six hundred dollars, yet the AT&T contract forces customers to pay $30 a month for unlimited wireless use. While this fascist and tyrannical behavior would make freedom activists and the Dali Lama cringe, an iPhone without wireless usage is just not worth the headache. Purchasing an iPhone without a contract and then adding the data plan on your…

Cricket to Sell the Nokia 3606

Cricket, in a desperate attempt to bolster its weak and archaic lineup of mobile phones, has announced that addition of the Nokia 3606. The Nokia 3606 has the specs of a budget phone, accented when one notices the 1.3 megapixel camera and 15 MB of internal memory. Cricket plans on retailing the phone for $179.99 which would be rather hilarious if it weren’t so sad. How does a camera with a 1.3 megapixel camera and 15 MB retail for almost 200 smackers? And no, the 8GB MicroSD doesn’t count because you can bet your ass that it isn’t included in the advertised price. Cricket needs to realize that both a budget phone and a high end phone have their advantages, but combining the two with only their disadvantages is an obvious recipe for disaster. Perhaps it is this type of…
