    HTC Scorpion Rumors

Tech dweebs and bloggers are licking their chops at the thought of a new Android device called Scorpion. The Scorpion is an HTC handset which will brandish an extremely powerful Snapdragon processor of 1.5GHz. Just imagining the possibilities of holding something with that kind of power in your hand would send shivers of ecstasy up the spine of any self respecting techie. (Or so they tell me.) The HTC Scorpion is still in the rumor/fantasy/dream phase and no confirmation has been made regarding a release date, or even if the handset will be released this year. What is believed however is that the Scorpion will be powered by Android OS. This isn’t surprising since just about every Smartphone that is scheduled for release seems to be an Android device. In any case, we…

Apple Sales Jump to 13.3% of all Smartphones

With the economic crisis still gripping the world with its merciless talons, cell phone sales have decline so far in Q2 of 2009. A report by Gartner claims that the decline is somewhere in the neighborhood of 6.1%. The good news is however, that Smartphone sales have soared 27% during the same time period. Nokia still leads the way with 45% of the Smartphone market, though one could make the argument that many Nokia ‘Smartphones’ should not be placed in the Smartphone category at all. The biggest jump in sales (13.3% overall) goes to Apple, with the 3G S continuing the succession of popular products by the company we all love to hate. RIM holds on to second place at 18.7%. HTC was steady at 6% while Palm did not crack the top five, despite more than decent Pre sales so…

Ozzy Osbourne in Samsung Jet Commercial

Samsung is pushing their new Jet handset in to the mainstream market by releasing a commercial with Ozzy Osbourne. While the commercial does not contain anything notable, (aside from the Metal King himself) it does show that Samsung is super serous about making the Jet a household name. The Samsung Jet is the world’s fastest Smartphone (at the time of this writing) and contains a whole slew of accessories and features. Ozzy names a few in the commercial, such as email and GPS. What was most notable for me during the commercial was how much the Jet resembled a BlackBerry. I don’t know why I never picked up on this before, but the resemblance is striking. Enough so that Samsung may be hurt when it comes to promoting the Jet brand. Also, I question the logic of using a…

    N86 Coming to America

The N86 from Nokia is heading to Whopper land as the Finnish manufacturer attempts to increase the market share of one of its better handsets. The problem Nokia has experienced regarding the N86, much like the N97, is that no American carrier is currently offering the device. Nokia, while desperate to recover from the massive beating it has taken in North America from Apple and RIM has decided to offer the N86 as a stand alone device. The N86 is actually one of the better camera smart phones currently available. It offers an 8.1 mega pixel camera and most of the IM, emails and Wi-Fi services you would expect from a high end mobile device. The problem for Nokia in this situation is not the phone, but rather the price. While the $200 price tag is not obscene when one…

Palm Pre Heading for the Netherlands

Recently O2 announced that that they will be bringing the highly anticipated Palm Pre to the UK. Today we have discovered that Dutch wireless provider Hi will be offering the Pre in the Netherlands. The Palm Pre is scheduled to be available Europe wide in September, with O2 supposedly making a big announcement regarding the Palm Pre tomorrow, July 7th. Apparently Hi and Telefonica are on good terms, (what ever the hell that means) paving the way for Hi. O2 is owned by Telefonica, bringing us a corporate triad that is spear heading the Pre into Europe. No word yet regarding the availability of the Palm Pre in other regions throughout Europe, but it is doubtful that any country will have to do without Palm’s saving grace. Pre sales have been strong in the U.S., but it is…

Palm Pre Coming to Europe via O2

After a successful launch in the United States, the Palm Pre is headed for the continent of culture to the East. (Europe I mean) O2 will be distributing the Palm Pre in the UK and possibly other locations throughout Europe. The bit of controversy surrounding O2 and the Palm Pre is that O2 will also carry the iPhone 3G S in the UK. That’s a nice slap in the face to Steve Jobs. (We’re glad to see you back by the way.) While no official date has been set for the Pre’s appearance in Europe, September appears to be the time Europeans will have a chance to get their manicured fingers on this smartphone. Don’t automatically assume that the Pre will be successful in Europe. There have been many instances of popular cell phone in one country that have been an utter flop in…

    Flash 10 Coming to Mobile

Minus the iPhone and BlackBerry, smartphones everywhere will support Flash 10 come October 2009. The list of operating systems that will enjoy Flash 10 include Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile and Palm WebOS. I am a little disappointed with RIM’s absence from this list, but there is plenty of time until October and I don’t see any reason why BlackBerry won’t join this coveted list soon enough. Apple of course, is addicted to abnormality; so it is no surprise that the iPhone is the odd dog yet again. While it remains to be seen if this year’s smartphones will be able to handle the system resource requirements that Flash 10 will bring, but with increased CPU power in this generation of smartphones, it looks as if the merger between mobile phones and portable computers is…

Students Using Smartphones to Cheat at School

I have often ranted about the idiocy of some private surveys almost as often as I have ranted about crappy apps. This time however, I have come across one of the most pathetic, time wasting, irrelevant surveys in the history of surveys. A company called Common Sense Media (with common sense apparently standing for nonsense) has revealed that its very scientific and cutting edge methods have discovered that students are using smartphones to cheat. Really?! I haven’t been in any sort of academic environment in over a decade and even I know that students are more tech savvy than ever and will use any means at their disposal to get ahead in life. What’s even worse is that Common Sense Media also reported that parents believed that using cell phones during a test was…

T-Mobile to Release the myTouch 3G aka HTC Magic This Summer

T-Mobile will be launching their second Android powered phone in the near future. The new Android smartphone is called the myTouch 3G or HTC Magic. While T-Mobile has remained tight lipped like a Gestapo agency, The Wall Street Journal has confirmed that the myTouch 3G should be out sometime later this summer or early fall. The myTouch 3G, coupled with the Touch Pro 2, also from HTC, is sure to make this summer rather interesting for Catherine Zeta-Jones’ favorite carrier. One of the issues I have with wireless providers and T-Mobile in particular is the brand recognition. The most powerful aspect of a phone is the name and the brand power that the name carries, yet T-Mobile always manages to muck up their brand recognition. Releasing two phones such as the myTouch and…

Samsung Develops World’s Fastest Touch Screen Smartphone

Samsung has officially announced that they have created the world’s fastest touch screen smartphone. It is called the Jet and Samsung have juiced up its engines to include an 800Mhz processer. The Jet is not all speed however. It supports a large 3.1 inch screen, with an impressive 16M colors that will probably make for some great video viewing pleasure. The most impressive aspect of the Jet however, is the 5MP camera. While smartphones are slowly beginning to catch up to standard mobile camera levels, there is still a gap when compared to budget and non-smartphones, with cameras often being neglected by designers. Aside from its positive camera specs, the Jet comes with XviD and DivX support, which will make watching videos on its wide screen a real treat. No word yet…
