Get Ready for the iPhone 3G S

As iPhone converts and those individuals debating on joining the ranks of the iPhone faithful circle June 17th on their calendars, this mobile atheist is still unsure regarding the credibility of the 3G S. On the surface, the specs of the iPhone 3G S looking rather disappointing and do nothing to wet my appetite. While those blinded by the Apple glare claim that it is not only faster, but gorgeous on the eyes, I can’t help but feel that this is just another way for Apple to make some extra money selling off a mid generation product before the iPhone 4 is released. The iPhone 3G S will still come with 16GB or 32GB – not enough in my opinion to properly utilize the iPhone’s full potential. The 3MP camera is also a bit on the shabby side, though it is an improvement over…

    iPhone Gets Dethroned

A wireless market research company called NPD has announced that the Curve has overtaken the iPhone as the best single smartphone in the first quarter of 2009. This may be somewhat misleading, as each of the top four carriers in the United States carries a Curve model, where as the iPhone is only available through AT&T. Regardless, the BlackBerry smartphone market share increased by 15% impressively, where as Apple lost about 10%. Of the five best selling smartphones thus far in 2009, three have been Blackberries, (Curve, Storm and Pearl) with the iPhone and the Android G1 coming in second and fifth respectively. With another Android model and several new Blackberries debuting in the near future, Apple will surely be looking to retain its current market share by any…

EU to Possibly Tax Smart Phones

Europeans, already cutting back on their baguettes and tea due to the current economic crisis, may feel even more burdened because of the European Commission’s proposal of slapping all smart phones with a 14% tax increase. The Lords and Ladies of Europe apparently still live under the illusion that the common man is no better than a medieval peasant and such a preposterous tax hike is a clear indication that the bumbling ruling parties in Europe couldn't run a small deli, let alone an entire content. While the 14% increase will only be levied at phones with mobile television capability, it hinders such a breakthrough in technology from developing in mainstream society. If the common European can’t afford the phone, then the technology cannot become common place and…

    Toshiba New Portege G-Series

The G450 (pictured) is capable of 3G Internet over HSDPA and UMTS in Europe but is chiefly limited to calling in normal use; the unusual double-circular dial pad is intended to keep the phone small enough that it can plug into a computer directly through USB for use as a 3G cellular modem, Toshiba notes. It ships with a small OLED screen, 160MB of memory, and will sell for the equivalent of $290 in mainland Europe. A second release, the G710, is one of Toshiba's first clear attempts at the mainstream smartphone business, according to the report. It will have the same 2.4-inch screen size and QWERTY keyboard of phones like the Motorola Q and Samsung BlackJack but will add live GPS; Windows Mobile 6 Standard will be onboard. The phone is described as a 2.5G device, though…

    Thumb saving gloves

Blackberry Thumb is hardly an official medical condition, but anyone who regularly does a lot of texting or emailing on a cell phone knows what it is. In New Zealand, a woman was diagnosed with "texting tenosynovitis” inflammation of the tendons in the thumb from too much text messaging. Some posh hotels offer Blackberry Balm massages to businessmen suffering from this condition, but short of checking yourself into a hotel or spa, there seems to be little help for those of us addicted to texting. IMAK, which makes SmartGlove wrist supports for carpal tunnel, designed by an orthopedic surgeon, also makes the glove with thumb support. The idea behind it being that it holds your wrist and thumb in a position that prevents further damage. The glove is beaded with…

The BlackBerry Pearl 8120 will not have GPS as previously thought

At the very least it will have WiFi to keep you connected wherever there is a hotspot.
It seems everyone has anticipated too much previously noting that the recently FCC-approved RIM BlackBerry 8120 Pearl will have both an integrated GPS module and WiFi. Turns out, the reference to “GPS” in the FCC documentation was merely a part that details how to connect a Bluetooth GPS receiver to the BlackBerry Pearl 8120. Closer inspection leads us to believe that RIM has not figured out how to fit a GPS and WiFi radio into the Pearl-package - which means that the BlackBerry 8120 Pearl will likely be launching with just a WiFi radio. Sorry to disappoint all you BlackBerry fans waiting for a GPS and WiFi-addled Pearl.. We have to wonder if both the BlackBerry 8110 and…

Sidekick Slide - the new and improved version or more of the same?

Other than the reduced thickness, the LX is relatively unchanged from the Sidekick 3 as far as the shape and navigation buttons are concerned. The only way a stranger might know you're not using a sidekick 3 is if he noticed how positively huge and bright the new screen is.
Unfortunately the thinner profile has reduced the size of the shoulder and volume buttons beyond what had been done to the Sidekick 3.
Dedicated Sidekick users will appreciate two ways the Sidekick has progressed. Danger has returned to a rubber coated keypad similar to the Sidekick 2. The screen also flips open as easily as it did on the 2. It does not catch on anything and a light tap in the upper right corner easily makes it flip around.
The only part of the LX's design that is not…

Pantech Duo offers both touch screen and a regular numeric pad handset

That's why it has included both in the Duo, a design that is not unique, but rare. The touch screen phone users complain that it is hard to dial a simple number with a touch screen keyboard, especially while driving. The Pantech Duo is an attention-grabbing device that addresses the lack of numeric pad on touch screen Smartphones, but it is not the "best of both worlds". To integrate a numeric pad, Pantech had to make the touch screen keyboard flat, making it not as effective as a classic touch screen Smartphone like the Blackjack, Treo 750 or the Motorola Q9. The Duo is for users who wish to get a numeric pad that feels like a "normal" phone, but at the same time enjoy the benefits of a touch screen keyboard, for mild texting. The addicted text users…
