    Apple Hardware VP Axed

It looks like Steve Jobs has dropped a guillotine on the individual he believes is mostly responsible for the Antennagate scandal that has rocked Cupertino since the release of the iPhone 4. Apple’s VP of hardware Engineering, one Mark Papermaster, has ‘left’ the company. More likely that Papermaster was unceremoniously ushered into Jobs’ office, where the great Czar informed him that it would be in ‘his’ best interest to leave. A nice severance package was offered, fake smiles and uncomfortable handshakes followed and that is where the relationship ended. If there was any justice, it would be Jobs himself that would have made an exit. Antennagate was huge problem for Apple, but it became a nightmare when Jobs started defending the iPhone 4 reception problems by first…

Android Number One in the United States

Call it what you will, but it is getting harder and harder to dispute the fact that Android is now king of the Smartphone market in North America. By contrast, BlackBerry devices totaled 28% of units sold and the iPhone came in third with 22%. The best selling Android devices were Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Incredible, HTC EVO 4G, HTC Hero and HTC Droid Eris. Going hand in hand with the Android in terms of success is HTC which is quickly becoming the most exciting and innovative Smartphone manufacturer on the planet. The iPhone is still the most popular phone as far as media hype is concerned and remains the strongest brand…

Fool Your iPhone 4 with My3G

There is no end in sight to mobile applications designed to satisfy a very small market segment. This time the application that is sure to be worthless to most, but a wet dream to 5% of iPhone users is called My3G. The app My3G is designed to fool the iPhone 4 into thinking that it is using Wi-Fi, when it is using 3G instead. iPhone 4 users who are fans of the FaceTime service, which allows two iPhone 4 devices to conduct a video chat, can only use the application with Wi-Fi. My3G solves that problem. Don’t expect the same quality with 3G however. The reason Apple blocked 3G use with FaceTime is because it felt most carrier networks were not ready for the strenuous demands which the service requires. My3G does have one major drawback. The application can only work on a…

    Jailbreaking Is Legal

Apple took a slap across the face from The Library of Congress yesterday, when the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was amended to officially make jailbreaking legal. Apple's statement to this change in law was as follows: "Apple's goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience. As we've said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably." This also means ‘jailbreak all you want, but we aren’t going to cover your ass if anything goes wrong.’ Apple is of course correct when denying any responsibility for ruined iPhones as a result…

Antennagate Proved to be Apple’s Fault Entirely

There was much bickering and arguing between mobile manufacturers after Apple presented its now infamous defense in the Antennagate scandal. Things have been unclear for a while, but now all of our questions have been answered. Why? Because ze Germans have gotten involved. A consumer protection group called Stiftung Warentest has investigated the iPhone reception problem and has reached a conclusion that Apple haters are sure to enjoy. The problem is 100% Apple fault and there is no way for Apple to defend their poor design of the iPhone 4. When investigating, Stiftung Warentest discovered that simply placing a finger over the antenna gap in the lower left corner of the iPhone 4 could cause a reception drop of 90%. This explains the dropped calls, poor reception and…

Best Buy Selling the iPhone 16GB 3GS for $25 CAD

Holy Crap! Apple and electronic retailers are shedding the iPhone 3GS like they’re Superman (which they aren’t) and the phone is kryptonite (perhaps). Best Buy is offering the iPhone 3GS 16GB from Telus for a miniscule 25 bucks Canadian. Those looking to purchase and iPhone and not shell out big bucks should nab one of these babies fast, as this deal expires next week. However, before you go running to your nearest Best Buy, just remember that there is a contract. A three year contract to be exact. This news can be compared to having the option of sleeping with a super model and then realizing that she/he is actually a drag queen. The excitement and arousal disappears pretty much instantly. If you are not scared by a three year contract (and you should be) then grab the…

Droid X Sold Out in America

Amidst all of the iPhone 4 drama, we have overlooked the amazing success of the Droid X. Since its release in mid-July, the Droid X has sold out in all Verizon and Best Buy locations in the United States. Those wishing to wait for the Droid X to become available again, will get their chance on the 23rd of this month. One of the reasons some industry experts believe that Verizon does not need the iPhone 4 in order to compete with AT&T in the smartphone market, is the carrier’s deepening integration with Android powered devices. Aside from the might Apple App Store, the Droid X is technically superior to the iPhone 4. The success of the Droid X cannot automatically be related to the problems Apple has encountered with the new iPhone, but there maybe a slight shift in the…

    Consumer Reports Snubs Apple Fix

Continuing coverage of Apple’s attempt to solve the reception crisis of the iPhone 4 has brought about an interesting turn of events from Consumer Reports. The independent reviewer previously stated that it was unable to give the iPhone 4 a recommendation due to the reception problems that have plagued the device. After the press conference in which Steve Jobs announced that Apple would be distributing cases which should rectify the problem, Consumer Reports had this to say: Consumer Reports believes Apple’s offer of free cases is a good first step. However, Apple has indicated that this is not a long-term solution, it has guaranteed the offer only through September 30th, and has not extended it unequivocally to customers who bought cases from third-party vendors. We…
