Apple took a slap across the face from The Library of Congress yesterday, when the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was amended to officially make jailbreaking legal. Apple's statement to this change in law was as follows: "Apple's goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience. As we've said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably." This also means ‘jailbreak all you want, but we aren’t going to cover your ass if anything goes wrong.’ Apple is of course correct when denying any responsibility for ruined iPhones as a result of a jailbreak. However, because of Apple’s totalitarian policy of using only a single carrier to provide its services in the United States, it is leaving consumers no choice but to start tinkering with their phones and take the inevitable risk.
