UK to Ban Mobile Phones in the Classroom?

A proposed new law in Britain could see teachers legally allowed to confiscate mobile devices if they believe that they are a distraction in the classroom. The proposed law was brought forth by Education Secretary Michael Grove and received massive support from educators throughout the country. While this law is sound in theory and it cannot be argued that Secretary Grove means well, it is just another example of how British ideals are out of sync with society. Contemporary culture is moving in the direction that the use of mobile phones is acceptable in almost any environment. Most places of employment as well as public establishments such as grocery stores, libraries and even government offices are no longer prohibiting their use. The most important goal of any…

Where Can You Find Free Applications?

An interesting study revealed some key facts regarding app services and their percentage of free applications. The variance was surprising to say the least. Android by far offers the highest percentage of free applications with 57%. The App Store on the other hand, offers only 23% of it applications without charge. There is the argument that Apple applications are required to obtain a higher standard than their Android counterparts due to Apple’s tyrannical app approval process. However, Apple is notorious for blocking more free applications than paid applications. The reason being is that there is no cut for Apple from free apps. Google has taken a different approach to their Android market. Google will basically allow any type of app, paid or free, and while this…

    Yet another Internet Fool

Looks like people haven’t learned the most important lesson of our generation. It is that the internet is extremely public and anything you do on it can and will be seen by somebody. Case in point: A Best Buy employee will probably be canned due to two YouTube movies that he or she created which make fun of iPhone and EVO 4G fanboys. Apparently Best Buy wasn’t exactly thrilled with either movie, that have combined to total 2.5 million views. The reason for Best Buy’s displeasure is unclear, as neither movie mentioned the electronic retailer’s name. Regardless of the reason, the employee deserves whatever they get. People continue to be naïve when it comes to the internet and how in reality it is a megaphone that can and will reach everyone eventually. Some examples are…

    Disney Buys Tapulous

Disney has just raised its stake in mobile gaming by purchasing the mobile game developer Tapulous. It definitely is a strategic move and it highlights the importance we put on mobile," said Steve Wadsworth, president of Disney Interactive Media Group. That statement is completely accurate as Tapulous is considered one of the premier gaming developers for the iPhone and is the creator of the popular game Tap Tap Revenge. We have been very successful on the iPhone," said Bart Decrem, the chief executive of Tapulous. "We have been thinking, 'How do we position ourselves to succeed?' And after several conversations with Disney, we could see that we have a shared vision of the future and the iPhone as a mobile platform." The Tapulous crew will remain…

    Google Discontinues the Nexus Line

It looks like the Nexus One will remain unique. In a recent interview, Google CEO Eric Schmidt announced that the company has decided to give the Nexus line the axe and instead concentrate on its highly successfully mobile operating system known as the Android. Schmidt claimed that the Nexus One was so ‘successful’ that Google does not need to create a follow up device. Of course, this comment is filled with cow dung. The Nexus One has been a major disappointment and sales have reflected the public’s distaste with the device. However, one of the major goals of the Nexus One was to help the launch of the Android operating system. Whether or not the phone was influential in obtaining that goal is debatable, yet Android devices now outsell the iPhone and rank only second…

Apple Continues to Make Excuses for Bad Reception

Steve Jobs and Apple have gone totally insane. The ongoing mess revolving around poor reception has been one huge public relations blunder for Cupertino. Firstly, Jobs claimed that there was no problem and that users were simply holding the phone wrong. After being laughed at by the market for such an inane response, Jobs and Apple were further hampered by a leaked document that proved that the reception problem was with all iPhones. In a desperate attempt to sweep this problem under the rug, Apple has now come out with the following: ‘Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays two more bars than it should for a given…

Bank Offers Check Deposit via iPhone

iPhone customers who have the misfortune of banking with JPMorgan Chase can now enjoy a new feature that will allow them to deposit their checks from their iPhone device. By downloading the JPMorgan Chase application, users can deposit some hard earned money by taking a picture of both sides of the check and submitting them to the bank. In addition to this nifty service, users can also send money to other bank accounts, check their account balance and use a host of other painful tools. We can assume (or at least hope) that security is up to par with this new check feature. As more and more people treat their mobile device as a banking portal, rogues, cyber pirates and other scoundrels are sure to cause some trouble. The check deposit feature will be free of charge,…

    Microsoft Abandons the Kin

That didn’t take long. Microsoft is dumping the Microsoft Kin handset and concentrating entirely on the new mobile operating system called Windows Phone 7. The Microsoft Kin was heralded (by Microsoft) to be the next big cheese in mobile social networking. The Kin offered an integration of the social services favored by teenagers in one convenient package. Sales however, have been less than stellar and Verizon has recently announced that it will be slashing the prices on both Kin devices in order to rid itself of the remaining stock. This decision appears to have been made in tandem with Microsoft, who almost simultaneously announced that it was shifting the engineer team working on the Kin over to the Windows Phone 7 development division. "We are integrating our…

    Motorola Takes Shot at Apple

Apple is continuing to eat some serious cow dung over the reception problems with the iPhone 4. This time it is Motorola that is slapping the high and mighty Cupertino based tech firm that has been brought down to earth over this major kerfuffle. The new advertisement of the soon to be released Motorola Droid X device highlights all of the great specifications of the phone but also announces that users will be able to hold the Android powered device any way they wish. At the bottom of the ad it states ‘And most importantly, it comes with a double antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like and use it just about anywhere to make crystal clear calls.’ There is no doubt that Apple will soon solve the reception problems that have plagued the…

New Yahoo! Services for the Android

Yahoo! has released three new services for the Android operating system. Yahoo! Mail, Messenger and Search are now available for Android 2.0 and higher. While all three services can be downloaded separately, Yahoo! has developed integration between the three that will allow users to switch between the tools easily. The Yahoo! Messenger will include push notification and the Yahoo! Mail will allow users to upload photos, just to name a few advantages. While the Yahoo service is a nice change of pace from Google, there is no chance in a blue hell that Yahoo! will become a major player in the mobile software and mobile web markets. This is Microsoft syndrome all over again, meaning it is almost impossible for a third party to compete with a similar service on a platform…
