A proposed new law in Britain could see teachers legally allowed to confiscate mobile devices if they believe that they are a distraction in the classroom. The proposed law was brought forth by Education Secretary Michael Grove and received massive support from educators throughout the country. While this law is sound in theory and it cannot be argued that Secretary Grove means well, it is just another example of how British ideals are out of sync with society. Contemporary culture is moving in the direction that the use of mobile phones is acceptable in almost any environment. Most places of employment as well as public establishments such as grocery stores, libraries and even government offices are no longer prohibiting their use. The most important goal of any educator or educational institution is not grades, or discipline, but rather the development of skills and practices that allow youth to cope with life in the present day. Since we all have learned to tolerate the use of mobile phones in just about every location in our daily lives, then we must learn to tolerate them in the classroom as well.
