HP, Palm and Windows 7 News

HP has announced that it will not be releasing any Windows Phone 7 operated phones in the foreseeable future. This move was expected after HP purchased the struggling Palm Corporation, including their highly regarded but underachieving WebOS. This does not mean that HP has ceased to work with the Microsoft operating system overall. It has been reported that HP plans on releasing a slate device later this year that will be powered by Windows 7. What is interesting however is that HP recently registered the name PalmPad. This would indicate that HP has plans of releasing a WebOS powered tablet. They could be on the drawing board right now, but the idea is there. HP has not announced if it plans on using the Palm and WebOS names on the devices it creates, with some…

    HP to Release webOS Slate?

Looks like things are moving pretty fast in HP land. After the purchase of struggling mobile firm Palm, HP is rumored to be releasing a new webOS powered slate in Q3 of this year. Codenamed Hurricane, (See HTC? It’s not that difficult to come up with a decent name for a device) the new slate is apparently the replacement of the recently axed HP slate. While some, including myself, thought that the main reason HP purchased Palm was for its patents, it turns out that HP secretly coveted the webOS for its new iPad competitor. No price or technical specifications have been released at this time and all of this information should be treated as unofficial. Almost all major technology firms are set to release a slate type device this year. It is amazing how confident major…

    Palm to Release New webOS

The recently purchased Palm is looking ahead and the first thing on the agenda is the release of a new webOS. The Sunnyvale based mobile manufacturer, recently purchased by corporate giant HP, has announced that a new version of their webOS mobile operating system should be released in the next several weeks. ‘The next version of webOS is coming soon. You will receive an email alert in early May announcing the availability of an SDK release candidate. Please be prepared to begin testing your apps right away. Because the scope of the changes in this update is limited, we won't be going through a full SDK beta cycle,” stated Palm in a recent press release. Palm was purchased by HP for $1.2 billion; several months after CEO Jon Rubenstein admitted that his company was in…

    HP Buys Palm

Palm is no more. That is the word from Wall Street after HP purchased 1.2 billion USD worth of common stock in Palm. Jon Rubenstein will apparently be staying around after the transfer is complete by the end of July. Palm was in serious financial peril over the last year and rumors of a potential buyout were rampant over the last several months. Soon to be former CEO Jon Rubenstein stated in several prominent publications that he would consider any offer. While Palm does not offer any industry leading devices for HP, it does offer numerous patents for HP to wield in its future endeavors in the mobile realm. Half of Palm’s patents are contested by other companies however, so it is not apparent how useful they will be to Palm. Anything can happen between now and the end…

    HTC to Develop OS?

Could mobile manufacturer HTC be planning on developing its own operating system? Rumors were planted when HTC CFO Cheng Hui-ming confirmed the possibility in a Bloomberg interview. Hui-Ming cited the advantages of a creating both hardware and software, comparing the paths taken by both Apple and RIM as something his company may try to pursue in the future. Such a bold move however would require massive amounts of resources and corporate restructuring.

Hui-ming was also asked by Bloomberg about the possibility of HTC purchasing Palm. Hui-ming was tight lipped regarding the matter, but did reveal that there was no deadline for such a purchase. Palm has been in financial trouble for some time now and several tech firms have already began to sniff around.…

    Palm Buyout Likely

Palm has officially thrown itself at the mercy of the market; desperate to find a buyer before it disintegrates. Palm CEO Jon Rubenstein admitted that launching the Palm Pre exclusively on Sprint was a major mistake. He further commented that the Palm Pre is superior to the Motorola Droid and would have enjoyed more financial success had it been available via North America’s largest carrier. Rubenstein thus admits that it was not the Pre itself that has placed Palm in this financial toilet, but rather his own incompetence as a business man. Reports from Bloomberg have Dell snubbing such a buyout, but HTC and Lenovo are considering the acquisition. Whoever buys Palm will not only receive rights to the Palm, Pixi and WebOS, but several patents that Palm has for mobile…

Pre and Pixi Coming to AT&T

In a desperate attempt to avoid corporate death, Palm is whoring themselves out to the highest bidder. Word out of America has the Pre and Pixi handsets heading to AT&T and from across the pond, it appears that British carrier O2 will also be offering the devices. All this comes as Palm has officially acknowledged that they are fast approaching financial ruin and that any buyout offers made will be considered. The Pre and Pixi on their own are actually sound pieces of technology, but a crowded market and superior alternatives at comparable prices have doomed both devices and perhaps Palm as well. The Pre and Pixi phones will be available from AT&T for $150 and $50 respectively after mail-in rebate. Palm was once a leader in wireless technology, but is in danger of…

    Palm on Life Support

Palm appears to be down for the count. This was confirmed by Palm CEO Jon Rubenstein last week when he stated that Palm would be listening to reasonable acquisition offers. This downward trend has been plaguing Palm for several years now. Once a pioneer in wireless technology, the company has failed to keep pace with the competition over the last several years. Palm was praying for a successful endeavor with the Palm and Pixi handsets, but sales and revenue have been below expectations. It was reported that Palm was only able to sell roughly 50% of the units shipped to distributors. At this point, it is unclear which players in the market will be gunning for the Palm franchise. Microsoft is a possibility and some experts believe that an acquisition is likely to come…

    Palm Sales Continue to Disappoint

Palm’s sales of the Pre and Pixi on Verizon have been a disappointment. Palm placed some of the blame on Verizon, issuing this statement: "Verizon acknowledged that their execution of our launch was below expectations and recommitted to working with us to improve sales.” Perhaps there is some merit to this statement, but the biggest reason the Palm is struggling in the Smartphone market is actually two fold. First of all, the Pre and Pixi are not the phones they once were when compared to the devices offered by the competition. They were never top notch to begin with and now are starting their inevitable technological decline. The second reason is that there is no such thing as the ‘Smartphone Market’ anymore. Most phones today are Smartphones and the increase in…

    New webOS Update

The over-the-air Palm webOS update is now available to those on the Sprint network in North America and other major networks throughout Europe. The 1.4 incarnation of the mobile OS offers a few additions and upgrades to webOS, but nothing earth shattering to say the least. Palm users will now be able to edit and share video, use the Calendar and other tools more efficiently and enjoy enhanced notifications. Not bad for a minor update. However, logical heads ask why some of these features were not included with the inaugural installment of the webOS. Sometimes, it appears that mobile manufacturers are content to release a lesser product in order to be able to release more quality updates in the future. This may be an illusion of sorts to current customers, but potential…
