Could mobile manufacturer HTC be planning on developing its own operating system? Rumors were planted when HTC CFO Cheng Hui-ming confirmed the possibility in a Bloomberg interview. Hui-Ming cited the advantages of a creating both hardware and software, comparing the paths taken by both Apple and RIM as something his company may try to pursue in the future. Such a bold move however would require massive amounts of resources and corporate restructuring.
Hui-ming was also asked by Bloomberg about the possibility of HTC purchasing Palm. Hui-ming was tight lipped regarding the matter, but did reveal that there was no deadline for such a purchase. Palm has been in financial trouble for some time now and several tech firms have already began to sniff around.
Currently, HTC is a rising star in the mobile industry. Its Smartphones are now considered second to none by many analysts. However, the only way HTC can be placed on the same level as RIM and Apple is by designing and implementing its own OS.
