Singer/guitarist Joe King and singer/pianist Isaac Slade started the band called the Fray in Denver in 2002. They recruited ex- Slade groupmembers Dave Welsh (guitar) and Ben Wysocki (drums) and began to perform in Denver music clubs. In 2004 the band signed the record contract with the Epic label. The Fray issued its first album entitled How to Save a Life in 2005.
