Singer and guitar player Ric Ocasek, guitarist Elliot Easton, and singer Ben Orr started the Cars in the middle 70's. They recruited Hawkes (keyboards) and Dave Robinson (drums) to record the "Just What I Needed" demo for the Boston-based WBCN radio station. In 1977 the group signed the music contract with the Elektra label.
