The laughable and pathetic corporate policy is a result of terrible 3G network reception and speeds which have plagued the wireless provider throughout much of the UK, especially London. An O2 spokesperson said, ‘We're sending out the text message about Wi-Fi to selected customers who we think will value this kind of information. This activity is intended to help customers to get the most out of their handsets, and Wi-Fi is often faster.’ O2 has also discontinued its unlimited data plan as a result of its poor network performance. An O2 executive acknowledged that iPhone customers in London have suffered from poor service due to increased data usage on the O2 network. Britain’s leading carrier whined that data usage on its network has skyrocketed and that it is installing 200 additional towers to cope with the demand. While Apple is probably to blame somewhere in this whole fiasco, the fact that a second carrier has suffered from these iPhone related problems indicates that carriers are not fully prepared for the downloading maniacs that purchase the iPhone. Vodafone UK will begin carrier the popular handset and will be the fourth carrier to do so, trailing Orange, O2 and Tesco Mobile. The numerous carriers offering the iPhone has benefited Apple greatly, while the monopoly that AT&T currently holds in the United States has been a source of much headache and irritation. It would be wise for Apple to offer the iPhone on as many carriers as possible in the United States. (Europe I mean) O2 will be distributing the Palm Pre in the UK and possibly other locations throughout Europe.
