Smart Goggles that could make lost keys mobile phones a thing of the past

Japanese scientists have invented a pair of intelligent glasses that remembers where people last saw their keys, handbag, iPod or mobile phone, reports The Daily Mail. "The spectacles - which come with a built in camera, display screen and computer brain - can even identify unfamiliar plants or faces. In fact, the only thing it can't help you find are your glasses. The Smart Goggles are the brainchild of Prof Kuniyoshi at the University of Tokyo. They contain a compact video camera which films everything the wearer looks at - and a viewfinder which fits snugly in front of the right lens. To use the glasses, the wearer first wanders around a house or workplace for an hour or so, looking at the objects he or she may later want to find in a hurry. Each time the camera…

Zoombak GPS Locator For Your Pooch

Weighing a mere 2.5 ounces, the Zoombak GPS Locator will attach to your dog’s collar comfortably, featuring a durable and secure pouch.

Your pooch’s location can be pinpointed online on Zoombak.com, through a cellphone or even live customer care; although I think it would be pretty irresponsible to let Fido run around unsupervised just because you want to catch up on the latest TV shows in your living room. The Zoombak GPS Locator retails for $199 and is completely water resistant, featuring a 5-day standby battery.

Imagine that you are holding A Skype in your hands

Details are scarce at the moment, but Sony makes clear mention of a Skype client for the handheld game system on its 2008 promo site, which is pretty official though we're going to hold our breath a little till we see a press release. Obviously, we'll be hearing a lot more about this when the big show kicks off this month, but until then at least we can all sleep a little better at night knowing that the PSP is about to get yet another succulent function. Again, we all expect Sony to announce the magic on the Consumer electronic show, January 7 - 10 in Las Vegas, if not…well, we wont forgive.

Korea aims to reduce telephone costs per household

Korea is preparing a new rule that will allow landline phone clientele to switch to Internet-based telephone carriers without changing their phone numbers. The new rule will be a bonus for consumers, but could cause severe damage to traditional telephone companies such as KT Corp. The government plans to bring in the "number portability" rule for landline and Internet telephony customers in the first half of next year. In 2005, Korea awarded seven licenses to Internet telephony operators, but the move didn’t spark a mass migration to Internet operators because the Internet telephone users require a new number with the prefix "070”. The new rule is aimed at reducing telephone costs for households in Korea; one of the worlds’s most wired nations with more…

    NEC Reveals Lui

Rather than depend exclusively on a media extender core, the new concept relies on remotely controlling a home Lui Server and streaming music and videos directly from its hard drive: remote control would be handled by a lightly-equipped computer or handheld that only needs enough power and storage to make the connection, NEC says. In NEC's first product line, two remote computers will be available.

An ultra-mobile PC will include a 4.1-inch touchscreen that slides up to reveal a full keyboard; it should include at least Wi-Fi and run Windows CE. A larger, 10.6-inch ultraportable notebook will also be an option and removes the hard drive that would normally be found in such a system. Standing out from most concepts, NEC plans to launch Lui in at least its home…

A Secretary Of Your Dreams By Nokia

One of the more eye-catching mobile applications on show at Nokia World today is called Mobile Secretary, from Chinese firm InterGrafx. It's basically a 3D avatar that acts as your virtual secretary, residing on your phone. It's very fun.

Your secretary handles things like SMS and incoming calls. You can choose different types of secretary from your server site, you can fire them and download a new one, or train them to be smarter and more professional. And you can even take a photo of someone, and put their picture on the avatar. Mobile Secretary is available now in China, but Chiang says he's trying to drum up interest in Europe in the app too - hence his attendance at Nokia World. It's got that certain something that could make it a mobile hit – the…

Having Trouble Understanding Japanese? NEC Has The Solution

At present, it can turn Japanese traveler’s words into English instantly, bridging the communications gap by more than a mile. This is made possible by storing the software on a small microchip that can fit right inside a cellphone, capable of recognizing approximately 50,000 Japanese words for smooth translation of travel phrases such as "How do I get to the museum".

While it is possible to come up with a vocal English translation technically, NEC is not going to consider that idea at this point in time. No one has heard or witnessed this new magic from NEC, so at the moment, take this as a "that's what NEC says". NEC would need to study how to identify voices on the phone precisely. Another problem would be how the person on the other side…

Phone Can Now Take Pictures By Itself

Even if your cellphone has GPS, push email, and camera functions all built inside it, you still have to be there. While those are pretty impressive, the handset still can't take a photo without your manual help. This project hacks a standard handset, using a Picaxe microcontroller which allows your handset to capture images without you being there - all it takes is a text message and you're good to go.

The idea is to replace your fingers with the switches and your brain with a microcontroller. Depending on how compound your phone is, i.e. number of different keys to press in order to send a picture chooses your microcontroller accordingly. Of course, this would work great only if your camera phone does not come with any sort of sliding lens cover, else your…
