Some trouble is brewing in India. That trouble is that the second largest country in the world by population is running out of phone numbers. India has surpassed the 500 million subscriber mark which is a staggering number, outpacing analyst predictions from several years ago. The Department of Telecom, aka DoT (believe it or not), has issued a proposal that all mobile phone numbers in India change from 10 to 11 digits by January of 2010. Mobile operators in India are against the proposal, countering that it will take at least 12 months to implement such a change. The current 10 digit phone system used in India can serve no more than a billion numbers. With India scheduled to pass that milestone in the next few years, it would be prudent to solve this problem now, rather than wait. One thing that certainly needs to be changed is the Dot acronym. DoT? Unbelievable.
