China’s Minister of Industry and Information Technology Liz Yizhong predicts that China Mobile will reach 80 Million 3G subscribers by 2011. The reason for this is due to the implementation of the new TD-SCDMA network. Competitors of China Mobile are using the better known CDMA format, which Minister Yizhong acknowledges is superior to the China made TD-SCDMA. He also added that he was confident that the TD-SCDMA is commercial viable. Perhaps, but if it sucks, why would people join? Also, 80 Million appears to be an impressive number, but not when you consider the 1.5 billion people living in China. China Mobile is expecting to spend about 8.6 billion USD once the smoke clears. This will include the instillation of 60 base stations in over 200 cities across China. I wonder if the Chinese government can round up about 80 million of its citizens and ‘kindly request’ that they become subscribers to China Mobile’s new network.
