Prior to his leaving of office President George W. Bush announced a change in US policy, which would allow for Americans to send mobile phones to relatives in Cuba. This change came after President Raul Castro eased restrictions on phone ownership in the country. The easing of restrictions came despite the fact that George Bush and the Castro brothers are not on the best of terms. Bush went through with this motion following Raul Castro’s initiative allowing for Cubans to own mobile phones. Raul Castro has started a series of reforms which include the mobile phone reform in his country. Cuba’s state telecom company Etecsa predicted that 1.4 million Cuban’s have mobile phone contracts. This number ought to grow tremendously on the island of 11 million people following the changes. Washington’s embargo on Cuba is under pressure from American business leaders who say that sanctions and isolation have failed to bring change to the socialist state. Maybe the answer is more mobile phones in Cuba which will allow for US soft power to seep in.
