We all have experienced the annoying situation of our mobile devices dying on us when we need them most. Well now scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) seem to have developed a method to charge lithium batteries in only a few minutes. This invention would allow for a new generation of super fast charging cellular phones. The batteries that we use currently are made out of lithium iron phosphate, allowing for them to store big amounts of energy, however the release of the energy is still difficult. The MIT scientists say that the problem lies in the ions ability to enter nano-scale tunnels in the material. Therefore they have come up with a lithium phosphate coating that will assist the ions towards reaching these tunnels. A prototype mobile phone battery was produced using this technique and amazingly it could be recharged within 20 seconds. This is not a new surface material however the manufacturing is done in a different way. Hopefully we will find these batteries on the market soon. They definitely could make a difference.
