American folk singer-songwriter, rooted in Kentucky and Illinois, developed as a folk and country musician and a successful one at that. In 2003 John Prine was inducted in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, the mainstream country industry acknowledging his contribution to the genre with his music, including the 1997 album Spite of Ourselves, which included many covers of classic country songs.
