With only minor hits over their first decade and a half, it was Teddy Pendergrass who joined the lineup in 1970 and with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes recorded some of their best songs. He joining coincided with John Atkins' quitting, and Pendergrass quickly became the lead singer on the group.
