Musician and producer David Gates and guitarist/vocalist James Griffin met in 1968, and Griffin who had already released a solo album hired Gates to produce a new album, and they soon became a group and added guitarist/vocalist Robb Royer. Bread released their self-titled debut album in late 1968.
