R&B, gospel and soul singer and songwriter Sam Cooke is considered, to this day, as one of the founders of soul music, even referred to as the King of Soul by some. Sam Cooke earned these distinctions with 29 Top 40 hit singles in a short career that started in 1957 and ended abruptly and tragically with his death in 1964.
