Merle Haggard was one of the earliest innovators of the Bakersfield Sound. Coming from an economically strapped background, Merle Haggard ran away from home and spent his young life in and out of juvenile detention centers. His music, a blues-oriented country style, branded in the 60s as outlaw country, was intimate and honest when it came from the Bakersfield-born singer.
