Success as a solo sax player brought along not only greater audience and record sales, but also invitations to play with the music world's greatest. Kenny G was invited in the 80s, following his 1982 debut album, to play with Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and others. While comfortable with his pop-jazz status, Kenny G would record a jazz standards album in 1998, perhaps with the jazz musicians' criticism in the back of his head.
