The story of Elliott Smith begins as a sad folk singer, passes through some mainstream success and acknowledgement, and then returns to tragedy. The singer-songwriter, who seemed to always avoid publicity or becoming a pop star, has achieved this fate when he took his life in 2003 by stabbing himself with a steak knife. Elliott Smith signed his name and on a note that also said "I'm so sorry - love, Elliott."
