Singer and guitar player Ric Ocasek, guitarist Elliot Easton, and singer Ben Orr started the Cars in the middle 70's. They recruited Hawkes (keyboards) and Dave Robinson (drums) to record the "Just What I Needed" demo for the Boston-based WBCN radio station.
