New Picture App for the iPhone

Beanheads Consulting has released a new picture app for the iPhone and iPod Touch called Sort Shots. Sort Shots is designed to save users time by aiding them in find the pictures they are looking for instead having to scroll about, rifling through hundreds of pictures they may have stored on their iPhone. Sort Shots also allows iPhone users to create a slideshow of their pictures and even helps to upload photos to social media services such as Facebook and Twitter. At only $2.99 USD, Sort Shots sounds like an affordable and practical application. It does continue the trend of good apps that magnify the weaknesses of the iPhone unfortunately. Would someone please explain to me why we even need an application like this, when Apple could have easily built such a service…

    Kindle for iPhone Now Available

Amazon has launched a new app called Kindle for iPhone App. The Kindle for iPhone App (awkward name) allows iPhone and iPod owners to use their units as if they were Kindle devices. This is common sense on the part of Amazon, as due to cross platform technology; it would only be a matter of time until the Kindle became obsolete. Kindle for iPhone App is available in 60 countries around the world and will soon be available on BlackBerry devices as well via BlackBerry App World. The Kindle device itself, is the best selling reader on the market today and was designed by Amazon to allow users to purchase and read books available at Amazon.com. Kindle for iPhone App users, in addition to the massive amounts of literature they will be able to enjoy, can also download…

    App for Rogue Drivers

Android owners who are interested in breaking driving laws in their area can now utilize new application called PhantomAlert. PhantomAlert taps into the GPS device of an Android phone and warns the rogue driver of potential driving landmines such as DUI checkpoints, red light cameras, school zones speed traps and more. PhantomAlert is a smart system that continually updates by analyzing the user experience and submitted information. The application has roughly 400 different points of interest, a sum that will surely increase with time. These types of apps always carry an ethical and moral debate. Should we allow public hardware or software to be available for purchase in the private market which allows the consumer to break the law? On the whole, we know that these…

    No More ATM Fees App

Tired of outrageous ATM fees? If you constantly take it up the bung hole every time you make a withdrawal and you happen to live in the great country of Canada, then you are in luck. Two Canadian banks, Scotiabank and TD Canada Trust, have teamed up to create a new iPhone app called No More ATM Fees. No More ATM Fees lets iPhone users located in Canada search their area for ATMs belonging to their bank. Canadians who use their own bank to withdraw money will not have to pay the $1.50 charge levied by the foreign bank. Sounds like one of the more useful apps to be released in the App Store over the last little while. No More ATM Fees is compatible with TD Canada Trust, Scotiabank, Royal Bank of Canada, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Bank of Montreal. Looks like…

PC World: App Store Should Be More Open

PC World, the white knight in the technological waste land we live in, is arguing that Apple needs to do a better job in growing their own social media tools, though they acknowledge Apple will probably not be interested in making iTunes a more socially friendly environment any time soon. This whole debate sparked when Apple booted an app developer for creating fraudulent reviews for his applications. PC World argues that it is not possible for Apple to monitor the validity of all of their apps because of the sheer volume the App Store offers. This is why a more social approach is required. Of course, we all know that the Third Reich would never allow such a free thinking philosophy. Imagine people speaking up and making the App Store a better place? Shocking! It would…

Apple Removes App Due to Fraudulent Reviews

Looks like I spoke too soon. The Aryan efficiency with which Apple runs their App Store has finally provided some positive results. Apparently, a rogue app developer, Molinker Inc, submitted over 40 fake five star reviews for their app called NightCam Pro. App Store bigwig Phil Schiller acted with swift and merciless action by not only removing the app in question, but also removing an additional 1900 apps created by Molinker. This is surely one of the few examples that Apples Third Reich approach to their app service actual carries some merit. An open source platform such as Android would probably not have acted as quickly to combat such an offense. Apple’s response to this event should raise a red flag to other app developers who are contemplating similar unethical…

Should Apple Go Quality Over Quantity?

David Coursey over at PC World really hit the nail with his article called ‘Apple Should Approve Fewer But Better iPhone Apps’. In his article, David mentions several reasons why Apple should alter its approval policy regarding iPhone apps. The most important factor was the emergence of the Android app platform that is specifically geared towards an open source concept. With Apple effectively using a closed source concept, (Does anyone really know what the app store guidelines really are?) it could be prudent and imperative for Apple to emphasize quality over quantity. Google is by far and away the undisputed king of bulk content on the internet. With the Android gaining popularity in massive strides over the last several months, it would appear unlikely that Apple will…

New Blog Tracks Rejected App Store Submissions

Yet again I am stunned at the naivety of some iPhone app developers. Apparently, a blog exists that allows iPhone app developers to vent their frustrations about rejected apps by Apple. The blog, which you can find at http://apprejections.com/, is a merger of complaints and conspiracy theories behind Apple’s rejections. Since Apple approves and rejects apps without consistency or uniformity, it puzzles me how this blog could be used as a database to aid future app developers. Another possibility is that this blog could be taken to the FCC after enough complaints of have been submitted. Let me paint a very clear picture for all those of you who think that this is a feasible option. The FCC goes to Apple and asks why this blog has so many complaints about their approval…

eBuddy Available For The iPhone and iPod

The instant messaging service eBuddy, is now available on the iPhone and iPod Touch. eBuddy is a neat little app that allows users to combine multiple IM services into one package. For example, users can combine Windows Live and Facebook into a single interface, making it easier to handle several social networks at once. eBuddy is free to use, but does contain the usual annoying advertisements that we have all long since learned to ignore. To get rid of the pesky banners, a Pro version of eBuddy can be purchased for five dollars. Two cool features of the eBuddy is the ability to switch between social apps with a simply swipe of the screen and to nudge a contact by shaking the iPhone or iPod. Both nifty if you ask me, but I wonder how the latter works if you’re on a bus.…

    Apple Rejects iDroid App

Usually, I am inclined to bash Apple for allowing useless and insulting apps that grace the virtual shelves of its App Store. However, this time I am forced to bash the actual developer for being so stupid as to actually believe that Apple would somehow approve this app. The app in question is called iDroid and it was developed by Swaw Apps, creators of the app Beer Pong and Spin the Bottle – both of which have drastically improved our miserable lives in so many countless ways. What were the Swaw folk thinking? iDroid places a red Motorola Droid like glow on the downloader’s iPhone and provides a link for further information regarding the Droid handset. Put aside the merits of approving or disproving this application for one moment. Why would Swaw believe that Apple,…
