New Web App Service for the iPhone

Steve Sheraton, creator of the iPhone app iBeer, has unveiled a new service that will allow iPhone users to download applications from outside the App Store. This service is completely legal and can be used by iPhone users who have not unlocked their devices. Some have decreed the Sheraton is a magician, when in reality, all he is really doing is allowing users to bookmark web applications based out of his Your App Shop. The user presses the icon on his iPhone and a web page opens up that can function as an application. While there is nothing wrong with doing this, it can’t be deemed a ‘bypass’ to the App Store. I am not saying that Sheraton is doing something wrong. On the contrary, the Your App Shop does carry merit and could possibly blossom into an excellent

Apple’s Misguided Arrogance

Apple, with their over inflated ego, always enjoy announcing every single milestone they reach. This time around, Apple bigwig Steve Jobs noted with much arrogance, that Apple has surpassed the three billion download mark for their very successful App Store. The blatant arrogance was not so much with that remark, but with the following one. Jobs went on to say that the success of the App Store has been so overwhelming, that he doesn’t foresee the competition catching up anytime soon. Now, we know and Jobs knows that this sad display of bravado is rather pathetic. While nobody can question the accomplishments of the App Store, to claim that it can never be dethroned is simply outrageous. We all know that the Android will outsell the iPhone in total units by the end of

Hollywood Super Agent Sues App Developer

Ari Emanuel, a Hollywood super agent, has sued the app developer of the iPhone app Super Agent. Emanuel’s reasoning behind the lawsuit is the resemblance between him and the character portrayed in the Super Agent application. Apple has removed the app from the App Store until this mess is cleared up. The developer of the app has claimed that the resemblance is purely a coincidence. In all likely hood, the misguided app developer copied the Ari Gold character from HBO’s hit comedy Entourage. However, it is widely believed that HBO sought out Ari Emanuel’s blessing before writing the character of Ari Gold into the show. As it stands right now, don’t be surprised if you never see the Super Agent app again in the App Store. Apple is making a strong move towards offering

Bold App Predictions by Mobile ‘Experts’

Predictions in the mobile industry have become somewhat of a national pastime in the United Sates, with everyone, their mother, and their dog Chuckles, making predictions about 2010. Most of these predictions are thrown about casually like a stripper and her crotch less panties. This time, the guilty party is a mobile analytics firm called Flurry. Flurry CEO Simon Khalaf boldly predicts that the Android Market will boast about 150,000 applications by the end of next year, while the Apo Store will offer about twice that amount. If we look at percentages, this predication indicates a massive increase in the amount of Android application offered when compared to Apple. Of course, these predictions are always suspect at the best of times. Too often have me seen bold

New App Web Developer Kit Called Ares

Palm, in an effort to increase app developer interest in its webOS mobile operating system, have released a web application called Ares. Ares is designed to aid app developers in creating new and innovative apps for the Pre and Pixi handsets. The only requirement in using this new web kit is the creation of a developer account at the Palm Ares website. This move by Palm is a natural migration from a more closed and distant app service into a more open and transparent service, that Palm hopes will encourage developers to take advantage of the webOS capabilities. As we see more and more app services morph into developer friendly platforms, it is only a matter of time before the snobbery over at Apple will have to follow suit. If Apple does not evolve with the times, it

Rogue Developer Fighting Apple?

The one great constant involving a totalitarian regime is that it always breeds covert resistance movements whose sole manifesto is finding methods to circumnavigate the imposed doctrine in order to accelerate their rebellious agenda. In other words, people always find a way to beat the system if they feel they are being treated unfairly. Possibly the most oppressive regime on the planet at this time is Apple. Emperor Jobs and his minions have ruled over the App Store with an iron fist. Thus, it comes with little surprise that one app developer is attempting to beat the system. A Kurulenko, a disgruntled app developer, is bypassing a draconian policy by updating the code for his apps via the web, instead of reapplying through Apple after making the desired changes. Some

New IT Job Board App

Individuals in the IT industry who are located in the UK can now take advantage of a new application created by IT Job Board. This useful new app can help unemployed or employed and disgruntled IT workers find a job more easily. IT Job Board allows users to search a database of over 20,000 jobs, though with the way Prime Minister Gordon Brown is eliminating jobs in the private sector, there may not be 2,000 jobs left, let alone 20,000. IT Job Board can sort jobs by salary, location and several other factors that will greatly aid in navigating through the countless jobs listings available. You can even save the most applicable job postings and send them to your inbox. Of course, an even better feature would be job listings outside of the EU. With the way the EU is

UPS to Release New BlackBerry App

UPS is set to release a new BlackBerry app that will make it easier for mobile users to connect, ship and stay informed. The new UPS Mobile app allows BlackBerry users to scan for the nearest UPS locations, in addition to a whole host of features, such as tracking shipment, creating a new shipment, printing labels, shipping rate calculation and on and on. Basically, everything an individual could ever want from an app such as this one. The app also tracks shipping in real time, which is both good and bad. Good, because this helps a customer know exactly where the package is at all times and bad, because there is nothing worse than seeing a package stuck in customs for three straight days every time you check the shipping status. The UPS BlackBerry app is compatible with

RedLaser Downloads Exceed 750,000

If you build it they will come is synonymous with the cheesy, but still enjoyable drama, field of dreams. But in reality, it was a then little known app developer called Occipital that heard the voice, and not a pansy Kevin Costner. Occipital designed an app called RedLaser, which scans barcodes and compares prices with other local providers as well as online. While sales were slow at first, an update by Occipital fixed many of the problems with RedLaser and sales proceeded to sky rocket. RedLaser has now been ranked in the top five purchased apps in the App Store for over three months. Numbers are very impressive for an indie developer. RedLaser has been downloaded 750,000 times, netting Occipital over one million dollars. Not too bad for a two man operation that is

Android Market Reaches 20,000 Apps

Mobilecrunch.com has reported that the Android Market has surpassed 20,000 applications. It was no surprise that Android reached this important milestone. What is surprising is that just a mere 5 months ago, there were about half the amount of Android apps there are today. While we all recognize the increasing popularity of the Android OS over the last year, it was perhaps unexpected to see app developers jump on the Android bandwagon so quickly. 20,000 may seem like a miniscule number to some when compared to the outrageous 300,000 apps available in Apple’s App Store, but Android should be commended for increasing and improving their product in the face of a strong market leader like Apple. 2010 will perhaps be the year for the Android. With dozens of Android powered
