U.S. Backs RIM in Data Encryption Dispute

The United States is coming to the aid of Canadian mobile manufacturer Research In Motion, in its on going disputes with several governments over access to encrypted date that BlackBerry users send and receive. Government hotshot and general all around nuisance Hillary Clinton is championing RIM’s cause. “We are taking time to consult and analyze the full range of interests and issues at stake, because we know that there is a legitimate security concern, but there's also a legitimate right of free use and access," Clinton said. "So I think we will be pursuing both technical and expert discussions as we go." It should be noted that the governments that have demanded access to data being used by BlackBerry subscribers are all from countries where, riding…

The UAE to Block some BlackBerry Services?

Underneath the façade of glamour and prosperity in the United Arab Emirates exists an unfortunate reminder that the country does not understand the basic premise of human rights and privacy. (Not that the United States has been doing such a bang up job in the human rights department over the last several years.) The UAE is threatening to ban some of the services offered by RIM on its BlackBerry devices. The problem is the information sent and received by BlackBerry users is heavily encrypted and managed by RIM servers. (Unlike Samsung, LG and others that do not encrypt most of the data on their mobile phones.) The UAE is worried that antigovernment parties will use BlackBerry devices in order to harness the manifesto of opposition and discontent with the ruling body.…

RIM Secures the Domain Name Blackpad

BlackBerry is making a pad? The answer is probably as most technical firms are either in the midst of or currently contemplating, making a product similar to the iPad. It appears that many companies are blinded to Apple accomplishments and could be perhaps foolishly attempting to mimic an idea that could hardly be decreed a success at this time. RIM is no exception, as the Canadian based mobile manufacturer has purchased the domain name Blackpad. Rumors are describing the BlackBerry pad/tablet/slate as a seven inch screen powerhouse with a 1GHz processor and the BlackBerry 6 operating system. That doesn’t mean much. What we do know is that RIM will have to make the Blackpad business oriented, as it does not have the social and entertainment services in its app store…

    AT&T and RIM Joining Forces?

Rumors are making their way across the blogosphere regarding the new BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider phone. Suspicions were raised initially when AT&T and RIM announced a joint press conference on August 3rd. While there is no clear indication regarding the announcement’s intent, there is little doubt in the minds of tech gurus as to the agenda. It is also expected that RIM will be displaying the new and exciting BlackBerry 6 mobile operating system. RIM is still the Smartphone king in the United States, controlling roughly 42% of the Smartphone market. AT&T is the second largest wireless provider in the country, second to Verizon by only a small margin. On AT&T’s part, this maybe be a crucial move as they attempt to prepare themselves for the day when their exclusive…

    RIM Shows Apple No Mercy

His lordship, Steve Jobs, was scrambling during the now infamous reception press conference. Under scrutiny for horrendous reception problems, Jobs attempted to deflect some of the accusations aimed at Apple towards other mobile manufacturers, such as RIM and Nokia. Jobs claimed that many smartphones suffered from the same reception problems that iPhone 4 users have encountered. Suffice to say, RIM and Nokia were not happy about having their devices compared to the iPhone 4 (how times have changed) and have retaliated in kind. RIM especially, released a very aggressive statement.

'Apple’s attempt to draw RIM into Apple’s self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple’s claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public’s understanding of…

New BlackBerry Phone and Tablet Being Developed

It appears that those sneaky Canadians at RIM are planning on releasing a new Smartphone and tablet device by the end of the year. Some information has been revealed about the phone, which should be released by the end of September. This new BlackBerry will be a touch phone that will offer a slide out keyboard for those who are not fans of touch devices. RIM chiefs are being more tightly lipped about the tablet, but have confirmed that it should be ready by the end of the year. Both devices will of course target business oriented individuals. While these and other RIM products do not garner the same media attention when compared to competitors iPhone and Android, BlackBerry is still by far the most popular Smartphone in the United States. The strong relationship that…

    RIM to Release a Pad?

Rumors are surfacing regarding the possibility of a RIM slate. Names like the BlackPad and Cobalt have arisen as possibilities for this perhaps fictional, but ultimately inevitable, product by Research in Motion. One thing is for sure, RIM has Apple beat when it comes to the actual name. (I would take BlackPad over iPad any day.) While no one will question this move by RIM if it morphs from fiction to fact, it does remains interesting to see how well RIM can design a product that does not coincide with its strengths. BlackBerries are not known for their touch capabilities and RIM has shied away from centering their devices on the touch concept. However, a slate or pad device without touch will be alien to consumers and may be considered an entirely different type of…

BlackBerry Curve 8530 Available in Pink

A pink BlackBerry Curve 8530 is now available for Canadians via Telus. The new Pink BlackBerry will be available for $299.99 CAD and a two year long contract. While not a top of the line Smartphone by today’s standards, the BlackBerry Curve 8530 is still a decent phone that can meet the demands of most users. Equipped with a 3.2-inch 320 x 240 display, a MicroSD slot that allows for an additional 32GB of memory and a GPS system, the Curve 8530 provides consumers with a product that is not outrageously expensive for the features it offers. The 2MP camera is somewhat disappointing, but expected when we consider RIM’s lack of emphasis on camera technology over the last several years. The logic of using Pink as a color is the only uncertainty regarding this mobile phone.…

    Android outsells the iPhone

I guess that it was inevitable. According to the market research firm NPD, Android operated phones outsold the iPhone in the first quarter of this year. Android powered devices were second in total sales in the United States during the beginning of 2010, controlling 28 percent of the market. RIM is still the undisputed king of Smartphones in America, controlling 36 percent of the market. While this report may be sound in numbers, it may not be sound in judgment. The iPhone HD will massively increase sales for Apple upon its release. In fact, most Americans who wanted to purchase an iPhone have already done so. It will be interesting to see a similar report four months after the iPhone HD has been released. This report also did not take corporate clients into…

    The New BlackBerry Super Apps

The mobile industry, much like other industries, has suffered from its fair share of BS. Another classic example took place during the Mobile World Congress, when some dude by the name of Mike Lazaridis dubbed the term ‘Super App’. What is a Super App? From the BlackBerry Developer Page: ‘A Super App for BlackBerry smartphones is an app that delivers a compelling user experience by leveraging the unique capabilities of the BlackBerry platform. Super Apps are the kind of apps that people love and use every day because they offer such a seamless, integrated, contextualized and efficient experience.’ What the hell does that even mean? It’s a bunch of stinky cow crap in my opinion. Before BlackBerry starts concentrating on Super Apps, it would be perhaps prudent to invest…
