Samsung Haven: Phone for Your Grandfather

Over the last several years, mobile manufacturers and wireless providers have strongly pursued the younger demographic, believing that adolescents were a potential gold mine in revenue generation. With more and more tools and services catered to annoying, obnoxious and far too horny teenagers, it is refreshing to see that there is a mobile phone designed specifically for the elderly. The phone in question is called the Samsung Haven and it is scheduled for release on July 29 via Verizon. The Samsung Haven has a 2.2 inch display with adjustable font size, dedicated emergency buttons and health and medical related features. Sounds like a useful device, but not one I would rush to purchase if I was of the golden age. Many older folk want to either feel younger or do the

Verizon Could be Abandoning Unlimited Data Plans

Reports are coming in that Verizon may soon be ditching its unlimited plan as it rolls out its 4G network. The rational for Verizon and AT&T, that was the first to abandon unlimited data plans, is that the majority of users only require a small amount of data. Thus, it makes business sense to allow the mainstream users to save money on their data usage and raise the price on those so called data hogs. There has been uproar in the blogosphere regarding Verizon’s new policy, but that anger plays right into the previous point made in this article. Blogosphere writers and reader are not the mobile mainstream for the most part. These are the people would be affected negatively with the change in data prices. The average user however, does not read tech blogs and does not

Microsoft Abandons the Kin

That didn’t take long. Microsoft is dumping the Microsoft Kin handset and concentrating entirely on the new mobile operating system called Windows Phone 7. The Microsoft Kin was heralded (by Microsoft) to be the next big cheese in mobile social networking. The Kin offered an integration of the social services favored by teenagers in one convenient package. Sales however, have been less than stellar and Verizon has recently announced that it will be slashing the prices on both Kin devices in order to rid itself of the remaining stock. This decision appears to have been made in tandem with Microsoft, who almost simultaneously announced that it was shifting the engineer team working on the Kin over to the Windows Phone 7 development division. "We are integrating our

Virgin Mobile to offer HTC Legend in Canada

Virgin Mobile is now offering the HTC Legend in Canada. Virgin is selling the HTC Legend to Canuckers for $80 and an outrageous three year contract. (Three years? Who says we abolished slavery.) The Legend is another fine piece of mobile hardware from the Taiwan based mobile manufacturer HTC. It is operated by Android 2.1 and sports a 3.2 inch AMOLED display. A standard 5MP camera and a slightly under powered 600 MHz processor round out this financially feasible, but by no means magnificent, mobile device. The HTC Legend is the first HTC phone that Virgin Mobile is offering in Canada. Virgin’s phone lineup consists of the iPhone and several BlackBerry devices. Hopefully the HTC Legend will beef up Virgins mobile offering, as most Canadians still consider Rogers, Bell

Verizon to Offer Two New Group Services

In an effort to cater to large groups, Verizon has announced two new services that are aimed primarily at small businesses and families. The first service is called Family Group Contact and is designed for families to keep in touch with one another. Family Group Contact will allow users to contact 20 people via phone call or text message at one time. Those wishing to partake in the mass communication need to dial a 1-800 number in order to use the service. Family Group Contact costs $5 per month. The other new service is called Group Contact and is more robust, as it is aimed at the small business community. Group Contact is slightly more expensive at $7 per month, but it allows the subscriber to create seven groups, with a maximum of 20 lines for each group. How many

Motorola to Release Two More Android Phones

Motorola has announced that it will be releasing two new Android powered devices on July 7. Both handsets will be available via Verizon, the leading wireless provider in the United States. Motorola top dog Sanjay Jha wasn’t exactly quick to issue a battle cry as Motorola continues to struggle to compete with industry rivals. "We will introduce new Droid products in the Verizon franchise," said Sanjay Jha. Wow! Don’t throw too much information our way Sanjay. The lack of enthusiasm in general from Motorola does plenty to hurt their image. Say what you want about Steve Jobs and Apple, but there is never a dull moment when they release, or announce the release, of a new product. That doesn’t mean that the new Motorola phones won’t be successful, but it does

Verizon and Google vs. Apple and AT&T

I was always a fan of tag team wrestling as a child and witnessing a tag team matchup of sorts in the tech industry is rather exciting. Verizon and Google are reportedly teaming up to create a tablet which is slated for release (no pun intended) in early 2011. The Verizon Google partnership is only logical if we consider the former’s struggle with AT&T and the latter’s quibbling with Apple. With Apple and AT&T working hand in hand in order to further their agendas, it was only natural for another dynamic duo to eventually stand in their way. Google has been working on many various projects and partnerships in order to further the evolution of the Android. A new alliance with Sony may see Android powered television sets. This on going struggle will mean more tech

LG Ally out Next Week

A new Android powered device will be making a debut next week. The LG Ally from Verizon will cost $100, along with a crippling two year contract that we consumers have come to love and appreciate so much. The LG Ally, will come with a 3.2 megapixel camera, an MP3 player, 3G and other standard services that one has come to expect from the simplest of phones. Because the LG Ally does not appear to offer anything out of the ordinary, it is almost laughable that we should consider the two year contract as something other than daylight robbery. It is worth mentioning again for those of you who are not aware of the basic premise when purchasing a new cell phone. Bargain phones should never be purchased with a contract. You will spend two years wondering why the hell you

Droid Incredible to Cause Nexus One Delay?

Some debate is raging in the blogosphere regarding the release of the Nexus One on Verizon. As we all know, The HTC Droid Incredible will be available from Verizon on April 29. This has caused some speculators and basement bloggers to question whether or not Verizon still plans on releasing the Nexus One at the end of April. The Nexus One website currently lists the release of the handset for Verizon in the spring of 2010. While the release of the Droid Incredible may cause a delay in the launch of the Nexus One phone, the device should still see store shelves no later than the summer. Those wishing to obtain the HTC Droid Incredible can pre-order a unit now online. The biggest question out of all of this in my humble opinion is the name. Who was the fool that came up

HTC Droid Incredible Coming to Verizon

Come April 29, the long anticipated HTC Droid Incredible will be available from Verizon Wireless. The HTC Droid Incredible packs some serious muscle when it comes to technical specifications. It has a larger screen than the iPhone and an 8 MP camera. In addition, the Droid Incredible will feature high-speed 3G and the much beloved Snapdragon processor. The HTC Droid Incredible is the third handset from the Droid series, following the Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Eris. Verizon appears keen on bolstering its already strong lineup of devices over the coming months and the Droid Incredible is another powerful Smartphone on their list. Pricing has not been revealed officially, but it would be a safe wager to assume that the usual two year contract or several hundreds
