The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed that all states ban texting while driving. A set of guidelines have been created in order to help state governments implement such a law. "Texting while driving, like talking on cell phones while driving, is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening practice," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said. An estimated 6,000 people die every year in road accidents that are related to text messaging. Not all are convinced that such a law carries merit however. Several statistics agencies and insurance providers have argued that the number of accidents and fatalities in states that have already implemented the new law has not decreased. NHTSA however, has decided to ignore the possibility that either their proposed law is unenforceable or flat out wrong. "Our top priority is safety and we are determined to help the states eradicate the dangerous practice of texting while driving," NHTSA administrator David Strickland said.
