Trouble is brewing in Japan’s mobile landscape. The country’s fourth largest carrier has officially filed for bankruptcy. The carrier in question is called Willcom and it is reportedly in debt to the tune of 2.2 billion USD. Willcom requested financial assistance from the state as it struggles to become solvent. Willcom is the last Japanese carrier to be using the PHS mobile network. The main contributing factor to the debit has been the high cost of upgrading the network to handle increasing demands of data transfer. Willcom currently has four million subscribers and is under joint ownership between Kyocera, Carlyle and KDDI, the last being the second largest wireless provider in the country. Japan his been one of the hardest hit economies since the economic crisis took place and some experts believe that their recovery will be long and arduous. With that in mind, it is not surprising that the Japanese mobile industry is feeling the pinch.
