Some in the mobile industry claim that Verizon Wireless will announce the addition of Skype directly into a portion of their handsets. The announcement is rumored to take place this Tuesday during the Mobile World Congress. The addition of Skype would mean that Verizon customers will be able to make calls by using 3G data services. Verizon recently slashed prices for voice plans, though it remains unknown if this is related in any way to the expected Skype announcement. Skype is certainly cheap when compared to other international dialing rates, but is yet unproven when being used by mobile consumers. With the decline in international calling fees across all platforms in many countries, Skype’s share of the market could very well shrink over the coming year. From a consumer’s perspective, this would certainly be a nice alternative to long distance calling cards. Some companies that provide said cards are notorious for fraudulent behavior.
