In a recent interview with The Times, Google’s head honcho of translation, Franz Och, said “We think speech-to-speech translation should be possible and work reasonably well in a few years' time.” This could potentially have major ramifications for the mobile industry. Imagine talking to someone in a foreign language and getting an immediate translation of what they are saying. This may sound a lot like Star Trek to some, but it cannot be disputed that human beings can only event what they imagine. This is why more and more Science Fiction staples may make the transition into the real world over the next few generations. While we commend Google for their creative spirit, it would be wise to concentrate on perfecting their current translation service called Google Translate, before aiming for much loftier goals. Google Translate is mediocre at best when making translations and cannot be trusted by the business community at this time.
