It appears that accusations of patent infringement in the mobile industry are becoming an almost daily occurrence. Motorola has accused RIM, the creators of the BlackBerry Smartphone, of blatant patent infringement and are demanding that RIM be prohibited from selling BlackBerry devices in the United States. Motorola claims that RIM stole its patents that range from Wi-Fi access to user interface. The problem with the mobile industry is that it has become too monopolistic. (Not to be confused with a Monopoly.) Monopolistic means an industry where many different companies manufacture similar goods and provide those goods at similar cost. With mobile losing its cutting edge status and slowly morphing into standard technology, (ala DVD players) these types of patent accusations will become more commonplace. Notice however, that many patent lawsuits are brought forth by companies that have fallen on hard times. Two examples are Eastman Kodak and Motorola – both of which have seen better days.
