Egypt’s leading religious figure, Mufti Ali Gomaa, has voiced his concerns regarding the use of verses from the Koran as ringtones. Mufti Gomaa explains that the use of such ringtones violates the sanctity of God and may serve to confuse those who hear it. It should be known that religious ringtones are advertised heavily on Egyptian television and other forms of mainstream media. Egypt itself is perhaps the most moderate of all Arab nations and thus, religious leader such as Mufti Ali Gomaa do not wield the same political clout like their counterparts in more extreme Muslim nations. Gomaa does say that traditional religious chants and songs can be used as ringtones, but mobile user should refrain from using any language taken directly from the Koran itself. It’s positive to see that moderate Arab nations are able to debate such topics. Other Arab nations would have probably resorted to beheading without much though regarding this matter.
