If you build it they will come is synonymous with the cheesy, but still enjoyable drama, field of dreams. But in reality, it was a then little known app developer called Occipital that heard the voice, and not a pansy Kevin Costner. Occipital designed an app called RedLaser, which scans barcodes and compares prices with other local providers as well as online. While sales were slow at first, an update by Occipital fixed many of the problems with RedLaser and sales proceeded to sky rocket. RedLaser has now been ranked in the top five purchased apps in the App Store for over three months. Numbers are very impressive for an indie developer. RedLaser has been downloaded 750,000 times, netting Occipital over one million dollars. Not too bad for a two man operation that is probably based out of Grandma’s basement. Let’s not get too excited folks. The app store is still a dead end for indie developers, but thankfully, one managed to float to the top.
